A. What is the problem and what are the causes of the problem?

There are several reasons why Jewish discrimination is happening. Adolf Hitler preached hatred and wanted all Jewish people exterminated. During WWII from September 1, 1939 – September 2, 1945, he nearly achieved that goal with the death of over 6 million Jews. That was the beginning of the White Power groups. The groups include the continuation of the KKK from the south and the neo-Nazis. These groups think that there is only acceptable race and set of beliefs. They promote shootings, assaults, harassment, graffiti done to houses, and many other hateful things. For example, on October 27, 2018, there was a shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. The shooter killed 11 people and injured 6 others, including police officers. It is really just an extension of evil and hatred from 80 years ago.

B. How has the problem affected the community directly

Jewish Americans are being affected greatly by this problem. Over 6.5 million Jewish people live in America, and many are students. This year a group of Jewish students in California were punched, harassed, and had hateful words said to them. They feared for their lives. The Pittsburgh shooting was another horrible day of anti-semitism. And after the Pittsburgh shooting, Jews were scared to be in large groups. The only thing that was on their mind was if they were next. Parents couldn’t go shopping without having their head on a swivel. Children were scared to go to the bus stop alone. Jews groups were afraid to assemble, thinking they would be targeted for violence. These are some ways Jewish Americans have been affected.

C. Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue?

Sadly, not enough has been done to end Jewish discrimination. The Jewish religion is one of the most hated in America. Every year an average of 800,000 Jewish people get discriminated against in America. There are about 5,700,000 Jewish Americans, so about 1 in every 7 Jewish Americans becomes a target of hate. During WWII after Pearl Harbor, Japanese American were forced to concentration camps. Over 110,000 Japanese Americans were sent to concentration camps. A little less than 1,000 Japanese Americans hid from going to the camps. As you can see, Jewish discrimination is 8 times the amount per person. Discrimination grows from fear and hate, and any race or religion could become the next target. That is why the rest of the world should be concerned about this issue.

D. What is currently being done to address this problem?

There have been many efforts to spread the knowledge of Jewish discrimination, but the White Power hate groups won’t stop. Former President Obama has talked many times about this issue, but not much progress has been made. Duke’s coach Mike Krzyzewski addresses Jewish values at the university frequently. There are many Jewish organizations to spread awareness such as the Jewish Federation, the Union for Reform Judaism, the AJC, and many more. These organizations don’t want to hunt down the hate groups, but to raise awareness to them. After the Pittsburgh shooting the city made a phrase called “Stronger than hate.” Also, the professional sports players in Pittsburgh made custom cleats to raise awareness. That is was is currently being done to address this problem in America.

Dear Diary,

Today is a day I will never forget, and I will forever be affected by it. I was at my synagogue with my family. That place was more than a place to prayer for me. It was a place of peace, where outside “noise” cleared from my brain. I could get away from all of the drama of life and feel contentment. We were about to be leaving when I heard an enormous boom. I jumped, turned around, and saw a man with a gun. I had so many emotions going on in my head; I was frightened, worried, angry, and confused all at once. This place was not meant for hatred. Fortunately, my family was not injured, but many other others were. When I got home I ran straight to my bed and covered myself in blankets. That day will forever haunt me, and shape me as a person long into the future. I will forever live every day as if it is my last.
-Jack
