English is the primary language for most schools and universities; Putonghua and Cantonese are also used. Curricula blend local content with international standards (e.g., IB, IGCSE, HKDSE with global benchmarks).

The schooling system I’m most familiar with is globalized in an uneven way. In big cities, many schools offer international curricula like A-Level or IB, and studying abroad is a common goal. English is a core subject nationwide, and Chinese students regularly top global tests like PISA. However, the core of the system remains deeply local: the Gaokao decides most students’ futures, and national identity is emphasized in subjects like Chinese and history. Students in rural areas have far less exposure to international resources.
