The industrial revolution was a time of great invention and such machines were invented that we still use today such as the steam train. In this age of rapid technological advancements meant that many people who lived in the country side were forced into the cities as the machines could do the jobs faster and more efficiently. So many people went to the cities for jobs as there was a high demand but this meant working conditions was bad and wages were poor. London was the most powerful city in the world but the city was in ruins due to all the factories there was a constant cloud of black smog over the city poisoning the air.

In Victorian England saw a huge increase in English population. As many couples didn't use contraception and child birth was very dangerous and many women and children died during child birth. Some rich children were fortunate enough to go to a proper school and received a good education. If a child was well off they were sent to a school were the owners tried to make as much money as possible with very little education. Poor children had to earn money for their families so young boys went down mines or up chimneys. Both of these jobs most of the time ended in life long injuries. In rich families children were seen and not heard and they mainly had children to carry on a family business or name. Orphans had it bad as if they were fortunate they would grow up in a work house were they were worked half to death to keep a roof over their head. no required education was introduced until 1870 when poor children could go to Sunday school to learn how to read and religious morals.

There was a lot of crime in Victorian England as the opportunities to earn a decent wage was few and far between so many poor people became petty criminals out of pure necessity. The main crimes were stealing food and picking pockets. The most common thieves were orphans as for them it was a matter of life or death. They even had a prison for people who were in debt and it was over run and if you were really in debt your whole family joined you. The prisons were over run and many people escaped so many people were scared of running into them. There were many women who fell on tough times and had to resort to prostitution. Even whilst the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper had been butchering prostitutes. The police had too many crimes to stop and muggins happen most days. To get rid of convicted they disported them to Australia but this stopped after 1868.

You either had money or you didn't. If you did have money you could buy yourself a good life. Whereas for poor people there wasn't many opportunities. The government didn't help the poor much and most of the money going to help the poor was from charitable rich. In Victorian England 5% of the population owned 40% of the money. Even though there was such a big divide the middle class was growing this included a banker £1000 a year or a shopkeeper earning £50 a year.
