A sample reflection from a former student (now has finished CHIN4020. It doesn't need to be as long. What's important is to make it meaningful.)

I always thought I would enjoy learning another language because I adore Spanish so much, and I am glad to see that I was right. Though Chinese definitely has the biggest workload of all my classes, I honestly enjoy practicing writing out the dictations and matching up radicals to figure out how to remember new characters. Just as Shannon said, it's hard to pull myself away from Chinese to do my other homework because I just know how much there is still to learn and how fantastic it will be to have a real conversation in Chinese where it doesn't take me thirty seconds to introduce myself!
At the beginning of every new lesson, I make a flashcard for each new vocabulary word, with the character on the front and the pinyin and English meaning on the back. I then go through the flashcards along with the textbook reading of them and practice repeating the words back until I can guess the words before the dialogue says them. I then practice reading the lesson textbook dialogue along with the dialogue recording to further practice recognition. I think I am going to start using 朴美爱的 technique of also writing out the dialogue to practice forming sentences of good structure because I still struggle with that quite a bit. Because of this, I have memorized both of my presentations so far ahead of time, but that's pretty difficult, and I need to figure out a way to practice communicating my thoughts on the spot.

I also am still struggling with pronouncing tones, but I think that is mostly due to how slowly I speak. When I speak more quickly, my tones come out a lot more fluidly, so I think I just need to practice speaking on my own more. Lastly, to help with tones, I just downloaded the textbook CDs onto my phone, just as 欧揎灵 has suggested in class a few times, and I plan to listen to them on my way to class/while I do my homework just to familiarize myself with the correct pronunciation of Chinese speech. My goal for this week is to understand sentence structure enough to improvise parts of my presentation.

Chinese is a hard language to break down into parts, with pinyin and radicals and tones and characters, but the fact that we can all give a short presentation after only a couple of weeks really speaks to 老师's teaching method and our hard work. I can't wait to learn more! 大家加油jia1you！

Time flies! You've come a long way since you started CHIN1010 back in August. It's time to pause and reflect on this journey of learning Chinese here at UVA／弗大。你觉得学中文有意思吗？What has been particularly enjoyable and challenging for you? Have you found out your strengths and weaknesses and what are your plans to address those weak links? Have you found the study method/strategy that works the best for you? Would you mind sharing with 大家 what has been especially helpful for you? Is there anything you would like to let 老师 know so that we can help you better?

These questions are there to give you some idea what you can reflect on. Feel free to go beyond these questions and reflect on whatever stands out for you. Meaningful reflection helps you be more aware of your learning process and helps you discover more of yourselves in general. I hope you find this process both meaningful for yourself and helpful for all of us as a learning community.

Unless you are the first one to post your reflection, I would like you to read over 你的同学的 reflections and relate to something they have mentioned.

Please complete this assignment by 10月1日，星期日，晚上10点。

Reflecting on these past six weeks, I have come a long way in many respects, not strictly in my Chinese but in many aspects of my life. In terms of Chinese, I have enjoyed the classroom model that we have, including engaging lectures with consistent assessment and homework. I feel like such a hands-on approach to language, especially at this early stage, is entirely warranted and helps create a reliable foundation for higher learning on the subject. The most challenging part for me is, evidently, speaking the language. I have tried my best to focus particularly on pronunciation with the tones because I now realize that my weakest qualities are my listening and speaking capacity. Studying the tones and speaking them to myself as I read the dialogue or practice problems has helped me organize my knowledge so that I can recognize between homophones through distinguishing tones. Also, actively participating in class and trying to pay attention to 老师 contributes to my growth in speaking and listening.

Happily, I again feel the joy of learning Chinese. The language is poetic and lyrical, and learning how to use it is exciting. In this classroom I have started breaking bad habits and have begun understanding what have up to now been grammatical mysteries. I am excited to continue learning and I look forward to proceeding in this class.

If I had any recommendations for 老师, I would request that we could, perhaps, involve more cultural aspects into our classroom. For example, in our first quiz, we read the famous poem by 李白 and today we celebrated 中秋节. This part of studying Chinese is not only fun but enriching, so I think if we could possibly include more of it into our study of the language, it would not be misplaced.

In these past few weeks, I found that I actually remembered some of the basic aspects of Mandarin from when I was a kid which definitely surprised me and I've been really enjoying the language. I think that the hardest part for me is the pinyin as well as the pronunciation at times, but repeating the vocab and sentences have been really helpful. Going over the grammar structure in class is also quite helpful.

Over the last 6 weeks, time really has flown by. I have found the structure of our class very helpful in reinforcing new vocabulary and grammar. It never seems repetitive, but instead helpful and satisfying. When I look at all of the material we have covered so far, it's almost hard to believe. We have learned so much in such a short time. I am excited to see what is to come! I have found my study habits to be generally successful. I make flash cards for new vocabulary and practicing pairing the pinyin/meaning to the character itself. This has been very effective in learning new characters for dictation. Something I struggled with early on was preparing fully for each class. By this, I mean that I would sometimes forget to check the course schedule or forget we had workbook homework in addition to Collab and dictations. Our Chinese class 同学 GroupMe has been extremely helpful in keeping me on track for class and helping everyone out in general.

If I had any recommendations for 老师, I would have to agree with 贺曼行 regarding incorporating more Chinese culture in the classroom. I took Chinese for a bit in high school, and we often discussed Chinese culture. It made learning both more interesting and informative, and it helped me connect the Chinese language itself to the culture, which made a more complete connection in my brain. Chinese culture is also very fun to celebrate and learn about! Additionally, sometimes the preview dialogue homeworks can be difficult to hear (quiet) or the speaker pronounces words differently than the textbook [however, I am able to overcome this obstacle after many times listening].

Throughout the past 6 weeks, I have enjoyed this opportunity to learn Chinese. It has been very difficult personally since I had no prior Chinese learning experience. I often feel flustered coming to class because, for many of my classmates, this is a review for them. Meanwhile, this is all new information for me. Although that may be true, I have found class very helpful. We go over vocab and how to say the words that we study for the dictation. When I study, I create flashcards for the new vocab, and then I rewrite them repeatedly in order to encode it into my memories. This is effective for me because repetition is a way for me to memorize things more easily. For me, I need to practice old vocab words because I easily forget words that we have already learned, so I need to dedicate a bit of my time to go over old vocab.

For my recommendations for 老师, I would have to agree with 马书雅 that some of the recordings for the dictation are hard to hear and understand. Additionally, I agree with everyone else before me that it would be a lot more fun in class if we had more culture lessons and activities. We would really be able to dive into the language more and enjoy the language some more.

Since the beginning of the semester, I've had a great time learning Chinese. As someone that had no prior experience or any idea of how the language worked, I'm truly amazed by the language and how beautiful it is. I really enjoy the powerpoints and the small activities we do to quiz our knowledge. Within these past weeks, I've realized one of my biggest weaknesses is definitely speaking the language. I tend to speak really slowly in order for me to pronounce my tones correctly, but it doesn't always work. I need to listen more to recordings in order to master the tones. Another problem I have, like someone before me mentioned, is forgetting past vocab words. In order to fix that, I just have to revisit past lessons to master them. So far, I'm still working out what my best strategy is that doesn't take up too many hours. Flashcards is one strategy that definitely makes things easier.

For 老师, I definitely agree with everyone before me that learning more about Chinese culture would be interesting and overall benefit our learning experience. Overall, I'm extremely glad I chose to be in this class and can't wait to continue learning the language.

After taking a year-long break from learning Chinese, I've really enjoyed re-immersing myself in Chinese language and culture. Something interesting that I've noticed is that even though I've already taken three years of Chinese, there are still some basic aspects of language that I have not fully mastered. For example, like many other students, correctly pronouncing tones is something that I often struggle with, especially third tones. Also, being able to speak fluidly without pausing to search for a word or remember a tone is tricky for me. I think that the way we practice speaking aloud in class is definitely helpful in this regard. Listening to myself and others repeatedly speak the words and sentence structures we learn helps these patterns stick in my memory. Spending time repeating words, phrases, and sentences in my daily life helps as well. In order to improve, it's important for me to spend time outside of the classroom speaking Chinese either with a Chinese friend or just practicing speaking Chinese as I complete other tasks.
I agree with previous students that it would be very interesting to further delve into Chinese culture in class. I also think it could be fun to have more interactive speaking activities with all of our classmates, not just with those who sit nearest to us.

I've had a wonderful time since the beginning of this semester! It's a really nice to go through the basics of Mandarin again. Though speaking Mandarin comes relatively easily to me, writing and reading has always been something I've wanted to work on more and this class has been really great for that. I think the daily dictations forces me to retain the vocabulary that we learn which is good because there are so many new characters every day! I think that the power points in class is very helpful and I definitely enjoy speaking with the other students in class! I appreciate the fact that we are not focusing so much time on just how to write characters, but that importance is placed on using the things we learn in actual conversation.
To help me prepare for dictations, the method that has best helped me is just rewriting characters over and over again until it becomes muscle memory.
Like previous students have said, I would love for more cultural aspects of China to be included into the class. I'm sad that I missed out on mooncakes on Friday!! One of my favorite parts of China is the cuisine so I think it would be extremely fun for us to go on a class trip to Peter Chang's one day. I'm very excited for the rest of the semester!!

I have always loved learning other languages which is why I decided to learn Chinese. I had a little experience with Chinese, however, nothing equivalent to the level of this class. I must say that it is one of my most favorite classes and I am truly learning more than I imagined in these short 6 weeks. It is a struggle to master the tones and formulate sentences, not to mention the memorization of the characters and meanings. However, the character system is not as random as I had imagined as learning the basic radicals really helped in learning the more complex characters that are mainly made up of the smaller radicals. I love how I am learning something new everyday and although the material requires a lot of repetition, there is always a way that 老师changes it to make it different and interesting. With dictations, learning the characters is easier when I visualize the characters as pictures. I would like to know more slang or everyday words that Chinese people use that are not in the textbooks, I think that would be really cool. I hope to someday be fluent in Chinese so that I can talk to Chinese people and learn more about their culture and they can learn about mine.

I love the language and feel very fortunate to be able to continue learning it in college. I do have a background with the language, but I have greatly appreciated how this introductory course has gone through and broken the characters down to radicals, making each complex character much easier to understand and remember. I also like how we are forced to study each night, I think it is really helping us learn a lot of material in a very short amount of time. I will say though, like some of my classmates have mentioned, the course is incredibly fast paced. If I didn’t have previous knowledge of the language, I think I would be struggling a lot. However, our teacher is very good and does a good job reinforcing the things we learned earlier on in the semester, so I think in the end we will retain everything just fine. I am excited to see how much we can cover by the end!

I started off learning Mandarin back in high school. While I have a basis in Mandarin, it has been fun learning new bits of information my high school teacher grazed over. Some examples include actually knowing where tone marks go on specific letters, and having a solid understanding of neutral tones. It's been challenging trying to break old habits and put tones on where they actually belong. I seem to have a firm grasp of tones and how to write characters but i still struggle to remember if a character is a 2nd tone or a 3rd tone. Sometimes I speak them the same. A study method that works well for me has definitely been Quizlet. I write character sentences on one side and pinyin + translation on the other. In terms of the pace of the class, I agree the class is incredibly fast and, like other students, I would see myself biting the bullet without previous knowledge. It's difficult for students to enrich their understanding of Chinese when there isn't ample time of the knowledge to sink in. I advocate more students should ask questions that are directed towards everyone in the class like a forum rather than directed strictly to the professor. While the professor has great explanations, it also helps to get the perspective from students who have already been through difficulties of learning.

I first started learning Chinese as a freshman at Hampden-Sydney last year, and fell in love with the environment I was in. I had a wonderful professor, made friendships that still last today, and overall had a great experience. After transferring to UVA this fall for other reasons, I wanted to hang on to this aspect of my college experience. While this class moves at a much faster pace than what I am used to (with all languages I’ve studied, not just Chinese), and required a substantial adjustment as to how I approach the language, I still so far find it worthwhile and rewarding. Do I hope to travel to China one day? Maybe. Do I aspire to be fluent in Mandarin? Can’t really say. However I do know, after studying French, Spanish, Arabic, and Russian, that this language is the most unique and interesting I have yet to come across. People ask me all the time why in the world I decided to study Chinese, and I’ve never really discovered an actual answer of substance to this question until I sat down to write this: it’s because of how different it is from anything I’ve ever been exposed to. As for my opinions specifically on this class and how it could improve (take them with a grain of salt), I’d say that I wish we would go back and review older, basic material more often. While I get that this is extremely difficult to allow for review days given our packed schedule, it doesn’t change the fact that I still trip up on pronunciations consistently. Also, for an introductory course, the pace at which we speak is incredibly fast. Annunciating more and slowing… things… down... a bit I feel like would help me and others in their early stages be able to keep up more. On the grand scheme of things though I've enjoyed my time in CHIN 1010.

Upon coming to UVa, I was enrolled in Latin, a language easy and familiar to me, but after the first day of Latin class, I decided that I wanted to try something new and worthwhile. I switched into Chinese on a whim and ended up loving it. I love the classroom atmosphere and the small activities we do. As someone with no prior experience with Chinese, I will admit that I struggle to keep up with the fast paced program. Instead of spending time reviewing, most of my time is consumed learning the new material for the next day of class, causing me to forget all previous material. Often I feel anxious upon entering the classroom because my grasp on the language is so limited, and it doesn’t help that the majority of my classmates already have had experience with Chinese and complicate my learning by saying advanced words and phrases. I struggle immensely with pronunciation and listening comprehension and often find myself lost because the lectures are so fast paced. Overall, I think my strong suit is reading the written language. Despite the hardships, Chinese is my favorite class at UVa. It is so fun learning something new and rewarding, and I’m looking forward to furthering my knowledge of Chinese.

I, like many of us, went to see Erin Kearney, of the University of Buffalo, present on how to introduce the crucial cultural elements of language learning into the classroom. This oratory was based on her recently published book about on the same topic. This presentation was divided into two parts, the first being a primarily theory-based approach to the topic, discussing how human-beings create language based off a pool of potential-meanings that are strung together using cultural context as the key guide. Knowing that humans rely strictly upon cultural understanding to create coherent meaning from an understood language, Kearney then asserted that culture ought to be emphasized in the classroom to a much greater degree. She said that many language teachers have the impression that external activities, such as study abroad programs or out-of-the-classroom trips, teach cultural understanding, and so the classroom is not necessarily the right atmosphere for cultural learning, then said that this impression was incorrect. She proceeded to give concrete examples of the culture centered activities she advocated as she moved into the second phase of her presentation, moving away from the theoretical and into the practical. The prime example she provided was of a French teacher having her students analyze a propaganda poster from the Vichy era of modern France. Kearney suggested that creating culture based activities, explicitly naming the activity as being centered on culture, and contextualizing/orienting the students to the activity are three necessary aspects to making the activities effective in the classroom.

This Friday, I went to see the speaker Erin Kearney at the symposium. She discussed what it meant to become inter-culturally competent while learning a new language and how we can enrich our language learning experiences. She believes that the meaning and culture behind words are what's essential to interacting with others and is what new learners often struggle with. More than just repeating words from the teacher in a classroom, Kearney believes students should explore culture and the community that the language comes from. The best way to learn a language is to comprehend the meaning potential behind each word, acknowledging the original connotation while also forming your own original connection with the words.
Often times, even if a student lacks the expansive vocabulary that a native speaker possesses, they can still convey critical thinking and analysis. Kearney gave us an example of a French classroom where students were asked to analyze a picture. Even the worst student of the class was able to express themes using limited vocabulary such as "light" or "small" because they understood the meaning potential behind these simple words.
The purpose of her talk was to encourage students and teachers to circumvent the traditional method of teaching and learning language, instead taking the time to form essential personal connections with the words of the language and the culture it comes from.

这个星期五，我去Symposium了。我看见Erin Kearney 说话了。她说intercultural learning in modern language education can be helpful in learning a language了. Rather than just learning the language, 学生 should learn about the culture where the language comes from. When a 学生is able to invest them fully into a culture, it makes the attainment of language much easier. There was a part that really inspired me and that I could relate to. She said that when you learn a language, you aren't trying to be 人who speak that language, but you are using your resources to try and express yourself to different 人. I could relate this to 中文课 because I'm definitely not the best 中文 speaker in 课, but that's not my goal. I strive to just learn and language that is intriguing and new to me. As long as I am actively trying to learn, I think that's what matters the most.

She emphasized the deeper purposes of language as forms of interconnected associations and meanings as molded by the contexts of our personal experiences. Language isn't just a compilation of words representing objects. Language can symbolize diversity, variety, and complexities to form meaning. In this way, language makes culture flexible and not just national. Kearney gave some great examples of this including Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream" speech and the American Dream. Because of the power of language, the words of the phrase "I have a dream" signify hope in combating oppression for anyone rather than just having a dream when sleeping. The American Dream represents meaningful aspiration for Americans including immigrants, not just a dream. 我很高兴听这个symposium。我感觉(gan3jue2, to feel)很inspired。现在我想学很多languages!

Something that stuck out to me was how she talked about how we shouldn’t just learn the denotation of a word, but learn about the cultural context behind the word. She gave the example of the French word for suburb, which seems harmless enough but in reality, carries a deep political meaning. She also stressed the concept that we use language to convey ideas through the words we use. I often put so much effort into learning vocab words and sentence structures that I fail to see this larger picture, and I think she makes a really good point.

The words that we learn are given meaning through culture and connection. In order to better understand culture and language, one needs to be more aware, for example, when she talked about banlieue, it was a culturally loaded word in France a decade ago and explaining that would be incredibly difficult in the amount of time she had with her student, yet going to France years later led to her discovery of a new cultural meaning of the word to simply mean "suburb", which is why it is important to keep up and learn cultural contexts of all things. It has made me want to learn the culture behind Chinese words more and convey ideas rather than just translations. 我想学中国的culture。汉字不是容易， 可是学中文是很Rewarding。我要学中文。我要练习说中文。 我也要练习写汉字。

This lead her on a quest to research methods for the successful teaching of an IC learning method that provides students with cultural backgrounds relating to the language they are learning through methods such as meaning associations. We all associate certain words or phrases with ideas or images, especially in our native tongue, [an example she gave was regarding the American dream: good job, white picket fence, 2.5 kids, etc.] and it is important to incorporate this learning method when trying to effectively learn/teach a new language. I will try and apply this into my 中文de studies. 我得练习说，听，和写中文。我最喜欢学中文。

I heard Professor Erin Kearny talk on the meaning behind words and the impact these meanings can have on cultures around the world. She encouraged us to look into the deeper meaning of words by connecting them to the cultural significance they hold. Her example was the French word for suburbs. A shallow transition of the word is just the word for suburbs, but she wanted to connect this word to the cultural significance and the suffering that came with this word. The word relates to a totally different lifestyle than we originally think of. Professor Kearny urged us to connect the words we translate in class to their deeper meanings.

So far in Chinese class, I've had trouble learning all the new words.

When looking for study tips, I'm honestly not the best person to go to. I tend to procrastinate a lot and get extremely stressed when the work piles up. I usually start studying late at night in my dorm's lounge area because I eat and hang out with friends before I start doing my work. I usually go to bed around 3:30-4am, but I don't really get tired during the day. This method works for me, but I recommend you stick to what works best for you.
As for my final project, I plan to use a lot of videos, which may incorporate some dancing/singing. I hoping it turns out alright, and 老师 is satisfied with my work.
