Global Health Security and Ebola Outbreak by Rosa Gissel Valdivia Reyes

The GHSA is the collaboration of 70 countries working together to reduce the spread and severity of infectious threats. My concept map focuses on the ebola outbreak and how the GHSA contributed to the responses taken. The assets in concept map highlight the importance of global health security and that it's important to continue improving it so that other infectious diseases won't affect many people.#gsha_conceptmap9

The article explains how the unexpected MERS outbreak in Korea was able to be efficiently controlled. They explained that this outbreaks was unexpected and that about 200 primary infections allowed secondary infections to occur and worsening the outbreak. Yet the Ministry of Health and Welfare implemented measures such as identification of cases, quarantining, and risk communication to regional, national, and even international entities to help control and prevent the spread of MERS to other regions. Measures as this show that global health security was prioritized and prevented infectious outbreaks from becoming epidemics or pandemics.

Although most of ebola cases were concentrated in the West Africa region, the CDC chose to educate the public on the measures taken to respond and solve this outbreak. This measure is part of the goal of the global health security agenda since their goal is reduce and prevent infectious diseases in different regions. Such responses as this allow other countries to be prepared if an ebola infection emerges so they can rapidly stop the spread.

The article explains that the beginning of the ebola outbreak had a lack of cooperation between countries and lack of political commitment to global health security mostly because the ebola virus was concentrated in the West African region. The authors emphasized that the GHSA must make sure that international cooperation is available so that countries, including developing countries, have the adequate public health capacities to help resolve epidemics like the ebola virus.

This image shows how different countries in West Africa were severely affected by the Ebola virus. As the graphs show, as weeks passed by ebola infections continued to increase due to a lack of responses. The GHSA was able to help reduce the number of infections in these areas showing that collaboration from different countries helps resolve health threats even if they are prominent in some areas more than others.

The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) is crucial in controlling and preventing a lot of infectious diseases. The GHSA is a group of more than 70 countries that collaborate with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and private sectors. Their goal is that through collaboration create different plans that will address ongoing infectious threats, like ebola, and plans that will help prevent infectious threats globally. The GHSA strategies and plans allowed ebola to reduce and ultimately provided a framework for how to control future infectious threats and how to improve.
