This article discusses how The American College Health Association (ACHA)

Committee on Immunization and the House of Delegates issued position statements in 1983 and 1984

stated that American colleges and universities should

require all students to present, as a condition of matriculation, evidence of immunity to measles, rubella,

diphtheria, tetanus, and mumps, with students under

18 years of age also providing evidence of primary

polio immunization.

This provided a map of the United States indicating which states have reported mumps infection. As of  April 25 2024, a total of 133 mumps cases have been reported in 2024. 2021-2024 case counts in the USA are presented in a bar graph format. From January 2016 to June 2017, health departments reported 150 outbreaks (9,200 cases). Outbreaks occurred in households, schools, universities, athletics teams and facilities, church groups, workplaces, and as a result of large parties and events. A federal expert panel recommends administration of a third dose of the mumps vaccine when an outbreak occurs. The move was in response to the rise in mumps outbreaks since 2006, especially among highly vaccinated college students. Evidence presented at the meeting suggests that waning immunity is contributing to the recent increase in outbreaks.

Measles used to be a common childhood illness years ago. At the beginning of this century, measles had been declared eliminated from the country. But now measles, one of the most contagious diseases to spread, is returning at a record pace as 17 states have reported measles cases in 2024.
