1. What part of the topic made you curious about?
The team is really curious about the lecture on Simulation-Enhanced Interprofessional Education. We believe that more than just learning about medical conditions, interventions, and other rehabilitation techniques that solely focus on our own profession, part of being a medical professional is also to have the ability of being able to effectively communicate and interact with the rest of the Rehabilitation team. We also believe that it is undeniably empowering to connect with other people in the field of rehabilitation sciences because healthcare is a group dynamic that aims to simulate a healthy framework amongst professionals. Apart from this, Simulation-Enhanced Interprofessional Education is an interesting topic for us to tackle because on a larger scale, it could help us have effective teamwork in the future. We are curious on how this course will approach and develop our skills in order for us to achieve optimum output and competency in delivering our services to others.

We also realized that at the core of every interprofessional activity is the willpower to become more responsible healthcare professionals in the future. This is why we are also curious on how our values and experiences will shape us into becoming the future therapists we will be. By engaging in diverse and structured simulations, as individuals, we could go beyond the confines of our comfort zone to expand our network of working relationships. More importantly, collaborating as a team in an environment that replicates the healthcare system would allow us to learn more about each other’s profession and equip us with teamwork related competencies in preparation for our internship and in our practice as Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists and Sports Science Therapists in the near future.

2. What possible future application of this knowledge can you think of?

In the future, knowledge of this lecture will be useful in helping us meet our goals as future Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists and Sports Science Therapists. It aids us in the chance to effectively communicate and collaborate with future professionals in the field and to expose ourselves to the necessity of teamwork and cooperation.

Apart from interconnection, we can apply this curiosity by beginning to collaborate with our colleagues in the present times and learning to be flexible with our time, efforts, and ideas. We can start by listening to each other’s perspectives and working together to ensure that we complete the tasks set out for us. In the future, we realized that we will be the same people working together and it is vital that we develop healthy group dynamics to ensure the quality of life and well-being of our patients. Communication on the goals for our future patients is also a must in interprofessional collaboration to avoid an overlap or a difference in the said goals per profession. As future healthcare professionals, our goals for the patient must be in line with each other’s field. As mentioned earlier, working together with people from different fields entails a team effort, which means that in the future, we should work together towards achieving one goal: to ensure optimal health and well-being of our future patients.

When we first created our group chat for IPE, we only knew what departments each member belonged to & that's about it. However, after watching their self-introductory videos from our CLL #1, I was able to learn a lot of fun and interesting trivia about the rest of the team. Each of them we're really creative in the making of their videos and was able to shine in their own different ways.

As for our PLA1, despite of our busy and different schedules, we were able to answer and pass the activity before the deadline. What I really appreciated in the making our PLA#1 was that the members still found time to recheck and comment on each other's work as to how we could improve the output. Feedback from the members is really essential in an interprofessional team because this would allow room for growth and improve the overall performance of the group.

What I really loved about our PLA #2 was that we were able to converse face-to-face and hear each one's experiences and opinions on the activity for the very first time. We usually talk via messenger but when we had our zoom meeting, I felt that I was able to connect and get to know them way better. With regards to family time, self care & heavy workload, I deeply related to their experiences especially in such a time like this. Personally, sharing my frustrations to the team felt that some of the burden I was carrying was lifted off from my shoulders. Finding time to just sit and talk about how we felt for the rest of the week was really fulfilling and assuring on my part.

As for our CLL#2, I noticed how we were more comfortable with each other and was able to finish the task way faster than we did during the first CLL.

After watching the videos, I was able to get a more deeper understanding of my role as a Physical Therapist as well as the roles of my fellow rehabilitation professionals (OT, SLP & SPS). I realized how important it is to establish role clarity amongst the team as to not create conflicts that could potentially affect the performance of the group and the well-being of the patient. Mutual respect and constant communication in an interprofessional team is really important to ensure that the treatment program of our patient(s) would go smoothly and according to the plan (Goals, Schedule etc.)

I'm not exactly a shy and introverted person, but finding out that we would be collaborating with people from other courses made me extremely anxious. I was scared that we wouldn't get along and it would be difficult to interact considering that we were conducting this course online. Although I was excited to meet new people, I still felt nervous making new friends in the process.

The Flipgrid introductory videos definitely helped me with my anxiety. Watching my group mates' creative spiels about who they were made me realise that there was nothing to be afraid of. I felt more at ease as I slowly got to know them through their interests and passions. Personally, PLA #1 was also a great way to interact with my group, see their strengths, and be able to find common ground with our likes and dislikes.

Starting off the course with our first CLA #1, I learned so much about good communication skills and team work. It was a fun experience for me to collaborate with other courses in my small subgroup and to be able to share our thoughts about the task at hand. I was even more motivated to share my thoughts as I saw how in-depth my group mates were in sharing their opinions.

As our first Zoom meeting for PLA #2, I was really glad that it went so smoothly. I started to open up more with my group when we all began to share our frustrations throughout the week. Despite not being able to meet face-to-face, seeing them on screen made the activity more personal and raw. During the task, I shared my struggles with self-care, academics, and family time--three things I felt so vulnerable about. However, listening to my group mates talking about their difficulties regarding the same topics and sharing how they overcame these made me more empowered to do the same. I undeniably felt inspired to continue the week knowing that I don't carry the same burdens alone. This meeting was sort of like my break from all the stress that online class brings, and I was really grateful to have been able to hear and share advice with my group mates.

With our CLL #2, I realised how much we improved as a group. Since the paper was not anymore divided into sub groups, I got to interact with more of my group mates and saw how fast-paced they work. I felt even more inspired to share my ideas and listen to their opinions on the task given. I could also say that this paper showed our good communication skills and determination to provide an output that is of quality. I also believe that talking over the parts during our Zoom meeting and making minutes about our discussion made it simpler and quicker to finish the CLL before the deadline. Communication is definitely key and made me realise how important it is to talk about our difficulties, share small pieces of advice, and identify areas for improvement in order to work better as a team.

After watching the videos on PT, OT, SLP, and SPS, I was able to widen my perspective regarding each profession. I was always confused about the different in our courses, which made the videos and posted websites increase my awareness on the specialities of OT, SLP, and SPS. I also realised that each course is unique and caters to different types of patients. I also realised how our courses overlap with one another. An example is how physical therapists can work with sports science specialists in terms of improving a patient's movement through flexibility and strength training exercises. I was able to grasp the idea that each course has its own specialisation, but together, we allow ourselves to better improve a patient's quality of life. I also learned from the videos that restoring function is a dynamic process wherein we tap into the skills of other professionals in the field of rehabilitation. Together, our roles are more clear and as a team, we could collaborate to help achieve our patient's goals more efficiently and promote their optimum well-being. It is all in the matter of team work and knowing which problems are our priorities for each session.

I was also excited as I would be able to get to know more about them as well as make new friends in the other departments of the college. Reviewing the flipgrid videos helped me in getting to know more about my group members even though we have not spoken to each other yet. Doing the CLL 1, we were able to communicate well in which task would one do. Also, despite having only communicated through messenger, the group was able to voice out concerns and clarify on how to address a certain questions and task.

As this was essentially one of the first times I'd have actual interactions with people from other courses in my batch, safe to say it was a bit nerve-wracking. I'd spent so much time with my OT batchmates that I was afraid I wouldn't know how to act in front of the others. However, the group, I feel, set up good foundational dynamics and we found a rhythm that worked well for all of us.

There was initial awkwardness as the call started but as the flow of the call started pouring in, it felt easier to share and talk. Throughout the Zoom call, I saw that we were all coming from the same place in terms of academics and how the pandemic was making all of us feel. It made me feel more at ease as I know that we all understood each other to some extent. It made working together in the succeeding assignments much easier .

I was honestly nervous at first when I learned that we would be working with students from PT, SLP, and SPS since I am a very shy person who takes time to open up to new people. But after viewing my groupmates' flipgrid videos, I was surprised that we share a lot in common and it made me more excited to meet and work with them. Doing the CLL 1 was also a nice start since we got to collaborate with each other and I got to learn more ideas from my groupmates regarding the activity.

Learning about how other professions worked individually and collaboratively created within me a deeper respect for each of my batchmates' practice and growing expertise. It was very interesting to see how each profession worked on their clients, as well as how we could collaborate to bring the people we serve to the best possible outcome; moreover, I think it helped us gained insight into how we can best interweave our practices in a way that is efficient and best suited for our future patients.

Watching the videos enlightened me on my knowledge of my fellow rehabilitation professionals ( SPS, OT, SLP). I was also able to know on how would be able to collaborate with other professions during practice by knowing each other's roles as to avoid possible conflict or misunderstandings with one another. I also learned how important it is to treat each other with respect especially when the scopes of our practice overlap. Feedback and constant communication is important for the team to be able to provide the best possible care for the patient.

Meeting with my groupmates via Zoom for the activity made me ecstatic (but nervous too) since we would be talking about what we value. The video call was quiet at first since the Zoom meeting was the first time we saw each other face to face. As we went on, we realized that we share similar struggles in academics and time for ourselves. I think that these similarities brought us closer together and more open to each other. It also aided in making collaborations in CLL 2 easier since we can express ourselves more compared to the first activity.

I loved this activity because it enlightened me about the roles of each profession. Before, I was not that knowledgeable on what PTs, SLPs, and SPS do but after watching the videos, I was more aware on what each profession does. I also realized that communication in an interdisciplinary team is vital so that the goals you set will be aligned with the other professionals' goals for the patients. It also gave me insights on how to address overlaps when setting a goal or giving interventions to the patient. The importance of role clarity was also emphasized in this activity which made me more aware on what problems to address or delegate to other members of the interdisciplinary team. Respecting each others' professions and opinions when working in a team is also important to prevent misunderstandings or miscommunications. Respect also opens up avenues for learning new things that you may not have any knowledge on. This activity made me realize that these things are essential in order to provide the best treatment or interventions (and to prevent harm) for our future patients.

Our group was divided into two subgroups and we had to share our insights regarding a video. We were not comfortable with each other at that time so we did not assign parts to one another. Instead, we answered the parts we liked and built up on each other’s responses. We also gave comments on how to further improve our works. I was glad and relieved that we managed to submit the output without having conflicts with one another despite not knowing each other well. Everyone was able to contribute to the worksheet and submit their answers on the group’s personal deadline.

Aside from providing the best services for the patient, it is also our responsibility to maintain a good relationship with them. They need our support and help in every aspect that is not limited to the disease or disability. I learned how important Patient Centered Care (PCC) is since before the person has the disability, s/he is a human being with emotions, interests, values, like anyone else. Focusing on the disability/disease might lead to misdiagnosis and cultural/racial discrimination because we fail to take in the other aspects. As a healthcare professional, our goal is for these patients to be able to perform their activities of daily living independently and engage in social relationships with others. We cannot achieve this goal if we are too focused on the disease, therefore we must see how it affects the various aspects of a person’s life. First and foremost, we need to show respect to the patient towards his/her beliefs and values regardless on whether they are aligned with ours or not. I have seen posts on Twitter of healthcare professionals misgendering trans patients by referring them to pronouns that they don’t want. To us, it might not seem much, but to them, it hurt their identity. This, in turn, can affect our relationship with the patient. The patient may be demotivated to continue seeking services from us if we fail to take into consideration their cultural and racial background as well as their gender identity. Therefore, it is also our job to educate ourselves so as to not say degrading remarks to them even if we do not mean them. Even asking the patient about it can help us avoid getting ourselves into a situation that we do not want. The last thing we want our patients to do is to stop seeking services from us because of the way we speak to them. Second, we need to be empathetic. In times, when we have to explain the diagnosis of the patient to the parents, we need to choose our words carefully by putting ourselves on their (the parents’) shoes. If they were to hear that their child has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), how would they feel like if we used a tone that made it sound like it’s wrong? It can be very difficult for the parents to take in which is why we need to provide our emotional support. We need to also listen to our patient’s struggles because their feelings are indeed valid. We are in no position to tell them what they should and should not feel. Third, once we get to know our patients better, it makes it easier for us, as a team, to create a plan that is tailored-fit to our client that would allow him/her to generalize these skills across multiple settings.

I’ve actually learned about Sikolohiyang Pilipino back in senior high school but only learned right now the importance of this theory in our profession. We need to have all these Filipino values when seeing a patient to provide the best kind of services. Aside from these, we need to provide contexts where our patients can have these values. After listening to the lecture, I realized how important the value of pakikitungo and it’s something that I should continue to work on. This is the way we bring ourselves to the patient and will determine whether or not we seek services from the patient. For me to avoid making insensitive remarks, I need to continue to educate myself on the different cultures and be empathetic. Before saying anything else, I must think of the person’s feelings. If in the case I end up saying something that is insensitive, I must apologize immediately and learn from that mistake. This does not go only for my patients for anyone who I talk to for that matter. Our words alone can do so much to a person which is why we need to be extremely mindful of our actions.

As aspiring healthcare professionals, it's essential that we tailor our treatment programs and interventions to the specific needs and goals of our patients/ clients. Aside from our relentless pursuit of excellence in our field of specialization, we should always put the needs of our patients as our utmost priority and ensure that they achieve their highest/ optimal level of function by employing a "'patient-centered care". Part of a patient-centered care is considering all the factors that could potentially affect the recovery process of our patients which is why it was highlighted in our Lesson 2 that we should always conduct a comprehensive history taking and at the same time, display an empathetic attitude towards the feelings and health condition of our patients. Another consideration we should take into account, in the making of our interventions, is their cultural practices as to not make them uncomfortable or disrespect the practices they believe in. Moreover, we should also take note that our role doesn't end once our patients are finished with their regular examination and PT sessions in our clinic/ hospital. We should always encourage them to continue with their program even at their households by providing them list of Home Exercise Programs and Patient education.

What I discovered about myself is that I still have to work on the way I interact with my "acting patients". Since my first year in PT to this day, we've underwent various case presentations and practical examinations wherein we either had to act as a Licensed PT or the patient. Most of the time I would be picked as the PT and while my professors provided some positive feedback with regards to the execution of the task, I felt that I still need to be more empathetic and sensitive to my patient's needs. Because they are only "acting patients" it has been inculcated in my brain that they're not really sick which greatly affects the way I handle and communicate with them. For instance, in our Neuro exam summative case, because my cousin (acting patient) did not really have balance deficits, as it was stated in our case, I became more lenient and not as considerate when administering the specified treatment program.

Having said that, I would use this realization to constantly remind myself that in everything that I do in my profession, I should always employ a "patient-centered care". Just as what my mom would always tell me, people who are sick do not just go to us medical professionals just to receive the treatment they need for their condition. Rather, they also seek someone who deeply cares and understands what they're going through. Thus, we should not act as if we're heartless robots that only seek to administer the said treatment program rather we should always display an empathetic and sensitive attitude to the needs and feelings our our patients/ clients. As the Adage goes, "A good physical treats the disease, the great physician treats the patient who has the disease".

In this lesson, I've learned the importance of prioritizing the patient over the reputation and beliefs of the health professional. Our patient should be out utmost priority, and we should give the best possible care; thus, health professionals should be empathetic, caring, and professional . We should go the extra mile and provide care even if the patient has already been discharged like accompanying the patient to his car, ensuring that he does his prescribed exercises, asking how he is feeling, and more.

I've discovered that I should strive harder and practice more on my skills as a student PT to be able to provide the treatment my future patient should receive. I should not be afraid to be called in formative case presentations as I would be able to assess and refine my skills with the feedback of my professor on my performance. I also realized that I should be more wary on how I speak as there are times that I say insensitive words without processing how it would affect the feeling of others.

At first, it was a bit awkward, but as time passed by we managed to warm up to one another since we shared the same sentiments over what happened the week before. We were all overwhelmed by the workload and the limitations of our resources (e.g., internet connection) which affected our health and relationships with other people. It felt reassuring that there are other people who feel the same way as I do.

Watching the video made me realize that actions or words, no matter how big or small, may affect care for the patient. It is important to be careful with what we say and do to the patient since we are trusted by them to give them the best possible care. Being knowledgeable about the diagnosis and best treatment for the patient is a must to prevent harm to our future patients. If ever it is beyond our scope of practice, we should collaborate with other professionals to determine the diagnosis and best treatment plan/goal for the patient. It is also important to be sensitive towards other people’s beliefs and cultures to prevent future misunderstandings stemming from cultural insensitivity. Patient-centered care requires having empathy in our part in order to look at them beyond their condition/s. We need to know how they feel when we are put in their shoes and to align our intervention goals with what they want/need, not what WE think that they SHOULD do. The activity made me look into my characteristics now as an OT student and what attitudes I may improve on. I realized that I am still lacking on my interpersonal skills since I am a very shy person. These skills are important especially when working in an interdisciplinary team. Based on experience, I tend to stutter whenever we are required to speak to our “patients” when interviewing them for their occupational profiles, and communicating their evaluation and intervention plans, and home instructions/recommendations. I resolve to improve my interpersonal skills by letting loose and talking to patients just as how I speak to my peers to ease the awkwardness.

The learnings in this activity showed the importance of having empathy and cultural sensitivity when providing patient-centered care. In the future, we would encounter different clients with different values and beliefs. As early as applying cultural sensitivity now when interacting with peers is important in order to understand the views and beliefs of different cultures. We know that culture impacts how a person decides on a certain matter, so it is important to take into consideration what the patient would want to happen in intervention (e.g. patient’s culture believes in the use of traditional medicine, etc.) and try to incorporate it to our intervention goals to provide patient-centered care. Collaboration with other professionals may also be applied as early as now through this subject when discussing about the goals that we may incorporate to the patient’s intervention plan. In the end, it is always important to show empathy and keep in mind that what we are doing is not for us, but for the patient, which is shown in this activity.

From the lesson on patient-centered care, I learned that the diagnosis of the patient is important, but the holistic aspect is more essential in order to provide proper interventions for them. These patients are more than their conditions--they have personal lives, emotions, and feelings that are valid and as their healthcare therapists, we must acknowledge these wholeheartedly. I believe it is important to be increasingly sensitive to the lives of others, most especially since we only know one aspect of it. Words make a huge difference and could greatly impact other people--we would never truly know the gravity of its effect on others unless we place ourselves in their shoes. Therefore, I realised how vital it is to gain a sense of respect and treat everyone with dignity, most especially if we are of not aware of their circumstances outside the treatments. This made me more open-minded to the fact that being a competent professional is important, but being empathetic and sensitive are also in the same wavelength.

I definitely discovered that I have so many areas for improvement before I become a competent future physical therapist. I am more willing now to become flexible and understand better the needs of my patients. I want to practice being empathetic and always putting myself in the situation of my clients in order for me to have a more sensitive mindset when it comes to treating them. I learned that I could improve on my social skills such as my communication and collaboration with others, being more aware about respectfulness, and also critically learning from my mistakes in order for me to provide the most optimum services and patient care in the future.

I believe what I learned from this topic not only applies to the course itself, but these are lessons I can bring with me in my journey of discovering how I can be the best Physical Therapist I can be. I learned to respect everyone outside the realm of my profession--to always empathise with other people's feelings and understand where they are coming from. I learned to be more appreciative of my encounters with other people because I know I can grow from every moment I spend in a different atmosphere. Personally, I learned to be more engaging because as a shy person, I tend to be closed off most of the time. I want to work on this and empower myself to be the voice for others. Professionally as a future Physical Therapist, I definitely want to be more sensitive and avoid with how I treat my patients by always acknowledging my mistakes and providing feedback that is holistic. This topic undeniably opened my eyes to the many difficulties we could face if there is a lack of communication, which helps me use this lesson as a stepping stone to become a more competent, respectful, and humane individual both in my personal and professional life.

In PLA 4 , we learned about the importance of communication on how we should be active listeners and effective communicators as to avoid conflict from the group. Showing interest and providing feedback when one person of the team is talking or sharing his/her thoughts is important as to not offend the person as well as let them know that you have understood his/her statement. The group was able to work together and come up with different opinions on the activity.

However, the group was able to finish the task at hand and was able to pass the project on time.

In PLA 6, we had problems in coming up with ideas in this project as we weren't sure if our classification of ideas were correct or not. Also, majority of the group were also tired at this point since it was already the week before preliminary exams. There was also slight tension as the group has just had a miscommunication from the previous PLA. However, we were able to talk with one another on how to classify these items and were able to finish the task,

The group was able to reflect on the miscommunication we had on PLA 5. We were able to share out thoughts and feelings on what happened and what went wrong. I think that the timing of this PLA was just right as the group has just finished their exams before doing the zoom meeting; thus everyone was able to destress a bit and talk about what happened. After the meeting, I believe that the tension present from last time has been cleared and new strategies was formed as to avoid the miscommunication from happening again.

Through our PLA and CLL #4, I learned that communication among the members of the team should always be a two-way process. Some may think that communication ends when the recipient receives the intended message from the sender. However, for communication to be really effective, the recipient needs to give the sender feedback for him/her to also improve. This greatly applies to us aspiring medical professionals working in an interprofessional team. We can be a sender in such a way that we share with the team the information we know regarding the case presented and we can also be a receiver in a way that we can give our peers advice or feedback as to how they can improve their performance and service towards our patients.

REFLECTION/ INSIGHTS ON PLA & CLL #5

For me, PLA & CLL#5 has taught me that misunderstandings and disagreements are inevitable in a interprofessional team. There would be instances wherein we would have different perspectives and understanding on a topic as we all come from different fields of specialization. There will also be scenarios wherein our roles would overlap and our interventions would not complement each other. However, I do believe that such situations are not bad at all for as long as each member reflects on his or her actions and strive to make the situation better for everyone. Conflicts when handled well can lead to better team dynamics and improve the overall relationship of the members of the group. In our case, I believe that we were able to understand and relate to each better than we did when we first met. I really appreciate all the group activities and zoom meetings that we had because through it I was able to work with wonderful and extraordinary people as well as realize the things I still need to work to be a better team player in other teams I would be assigned to in my internship and after I earned my PTRP license.

Throughout the activity, I was able to appreciate how important it is to have your own set of values that would guide you in your life choices and decisions. When you find yourself at a standstill or a situation that may be tempting, the values that you have set for yourself will help you move forward and overcome challenges that life may throw at you.

With regards to having shared values among the team, I truly believe that Ethics and values are essential because it promotes a better working relationship between the members of the group and avoid unnecessary conflict to arise.

Since the start of our PLA & CLL 1 up to PLA & CLL 7, we have been writing our individual reflections in our padlet. Through that we were able to realize our individual strengths and weaknesses as well as look back to our experiences regarding the activities. What I like about PLA 7 was that this time the reflection was not directed toward ourselves but rather towards the whole team. When we reflected on our thoughts and experiences as a group, we were able to understand each others' perspectives as well recognize where each member is coming from. We overcame the hurdles that we experienced as a group and developed a bond that is stronger and more united than ever <3 <3 <3

It is of great importance to have values and principles that are in line with one another in working with an interprofessional team. Our group firmly believes on giving each member a chance to contribute to our outputs. In this way, we better understand what we are doing and why we have to work together to achieve it. When we enter the field as rehabilitation therapists, these values that we carryover is important in our future lines of work.

All throughout our journey as practicing clinicians, we experience different situations, with different cases, different mistakes and achievements. Reflective practice helps us analyze our strengths and weaknesses and to apply these realizations throughout our service as future rehabilitation professionals. Some necessary skills needed to reflect on practice include critical thinking, self-awareness, problem-solving, and attention.

Unlike other models of reflective practice, Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle includes reflection on one’s feelings, a factor which often plays a big role in the process. I particularly prefer this model for it can be applied to our future practice when faced with patients. Being in an interprofessional team, we are required to reflect on what could have been done or may still be done in order to provide better service and treatment to the patient.
