This picture of children cooking reflects the time when Jeannette was boiling some hot dogs because she was hungry and she catched on fire. This is an example of child neglect because she was left unsupervised at the age of three because her mother would much rather paint than feed her children. The quote shows that despite Jeannette being hospitalized for her burns, she was still left unsupervised while cooking.

This picture of a person being controlled by someone else reflects Rex taking advantage of Jeannette's love and support for him whenever it is convenient and beneficial. The quote and image is an example of manipulation because Rex knew Jeannette would never say no and that she would always love him despite all the things he has done to her.

This picture of a glass castle reflects the promise Rex made his family of building them a home of their own where they won't have to worry about food, warmth, toilets flushing, and clothing. The quote and the image are examples of broken promises because Rex would constantly promise his children a better life and he gave them hope that things would get better once he found gold and built the Glass Castle. Rex never fulfilled his promises and the kids were always being let down until they grew used it and it no longer fazed them.

The image of the little girl refusing to share her dolls reflects Rose Mary always putting herself first and refusing to look after her children. The quote is an example of selfishness because Rose Mary knew her children were starving and that they ate whatever they could find even if it was from the trash but she still hid food from them and ate it all by herself.

The image of the little girl walking in a field in the clouds that has butterflies and shooting stars is her fantasy while the picture of her walking in the grass is her reality. This reflects the fantasy the Walls children were told to live in by their parents so that they wouldn't come to terms with hos bad their situation was and why it was that way.

Following the release of her memoir, Jeannette Walls was interviewed by the New York Times and in that interview she admits that she hasn't forgiven her mother for the way she was raised, instead she accepts the fact that her mother will never be someone who will take care of her. This is an example of acceptance because she no longer feels the need to hide her life story from people and she uses her life as a source of strength and motivation. She is now housing Rose Mary and looking after despite everything she put her siblings through.
