-India gained their independence in 1947.
-British ruled India for 2 centuries, for a while India resisted the british, however in 1939 it intensified, when the British committed India’s armed forces to ww2 without addressing the Indian representatives.
-Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi proclaimed the idea of a nonviolent campaign of noncooperation with the British. The British put the whole Indian National Congress behind bars.
-In 1942, the British tried to gain the support of the nationalists by promising governmental changes after the war. In the offer they gave, India’s independence was not there. India itself was split into two religions, the hindus and the muslims. The Congress party was mainly hindus and the Muslim League were muslims.
-Muhammad Ali Jinnah was the leader of the Muslim League and suggested that all muslims in the Congress Party to leave. Muhammad Ali Jinnah said “The only thing the Muslim has in common with the Hindu is his slavery to the British.”
-The British passed an act on July 16, 1947 that granted independence for India and Pakistan. Hindus and Sikhs were in Pakistan, and the Muslims were in India.

http://rivercity.wusd.k12.ca.us/file/1291557857997/1344348421783/5547505615865394130.pdf
