Paper Towns is set in Orlando, Florida and the main characters are Quentin, commonly referred to as Q, Margo, Ben, Radar, and Lacy. Quentin has known Margo since they were nine years old, but now, in high school, they never talk. Q has a chance to rekindle a friendship with his long time childhood crush and friend Margo when she knocks on his window in the middle of the night. They go on a midnight escapade to avenge Margo from the betrayal of her boyfriend, Jase. When the night ends, all Q can think of is how great his life will be now that they started hanging out again. A few days pass and Margo’s parents told Q’s family that Margo is missing. Since Margo has disappeared before and is now a legal adult there is nothing anyone can do. She leaves obscure clues as to where she goes, but Quentin wants to search for her and feels like it’s his job to get her back. He begins investigating and finds clues, but he begins to think they are suicide notes.

Q learns Margo is alive, but still feels as if the notes left were suicide notes. He finds out she accessed a page on Omnictionary, a website in the book similar to Wikipedia. Q searches for a connection between the zip codes that she left as clues. The zip codes are all in New York, but he only looks for paper towns because he knew Margo had a passion for such places and so he found Agloe. He read all about Agloe and saw that somebody left a comment on the page with random capitalization (Margo’s trademark) saying that Agloe, a paper town, will have a population of 1 until noon on May 29. Q sets out to find her on graduation day and his friends insist he needs them on the 21-hour drive.

After a 21 hour drive, they finally arrive in Agloe and see Margo’s car parked outside a deserted barn. They enter and see Mago writing, but she only looks at them and continues to write. Margo greets Lacey first and hugs her, then Radar, then Ben, and finally Q. Q is disappointed because he expected something more, but the greeting he received was nothing out of the ordinary. They start to ask her questions, but all she does is insult them and say she is ungrateful that they found her. Everyone retaliates by telling her how much they regret wasting a whole month just to look for her. Radar even says “I think like the clues more than I like you.” and this surprises her. Apparently, Margo didn’t leave the clues for them to find, she actually didn’t want to be found. Margo begins to fight with Q saying he is only upset because she doesn't want to be him. She goes on to talk about how he thought once he showed up to rescue her she would fall in love with him, which is not the case.

She tells him that she thought of everyone and everything she left behind, but this was something she needed to do for herself. She goes on to tell him that her leaving was actually planned through an adventure story she wrote as a kid and him being her partner and when Jason cheated on her, it felt like all the pieces were falling and she got to live her fantasy adventure. After that adventure though, she knew she had nothing else to do there and that’s why she left. Q just listened and was very defeated. He realized he loved another Margo. Sure, he loved the Margo in front of her. But he admitted that he was imagining a slightly different Margo in his head.
