Historical Development of Young Adult Lit

Young adult (YA) literature began as sermons to teach "pious living," (Bean, T. W., Bean, J. D., & Harper, H. J., 2014, p. 24). This changed when Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women became a hit with readers. Fiction books flew off the shelves, especially after the Great Depression. In the 1960's, Scholastic Book Clubs helped put books into the classroom and focused on realistic fiction for students. However, these novels were not very diverse and rarely mentioned controversial topics like sexuality and racism. By the 90's, multicultural fiction had a large following, but even in present day, minorities remain underrepresented in this media. Now, students are using technology in forms of online forums and ebooks to form their literacy. While ever expanding, studies show that students are still interested in the early works of YA literature. (Bean, T. W., Bean, J. D., & Harper, H. J., 2014, pp. 24-38)

Find strategies that work best for you and your students. Use these to teach reading and writing to your students. An example is creating a graphic organizer for students to fill out with information from the text. They can ask questions in these as well as answer questions. The more practice they get, the more experience they will have with literacy.
