On this topic I am indifferent. Some things social media influencers suggest are good, while others can be bad. They are an easy way to advertise for companies, but they can negatively affect those who follow them. An example of a negative effect is eating disorders in younger girls in order to look like those influencers they are following. They can also influence positive things such eating healthy, or going to vote. If I had to choose a side, I would have to say that social media influencers are bad.

Social Media Influencers are overall not good for society because they create a false sense of trust and relationship in their audience that can be used to powerfully influence them. For example, a simple tweet from Elon Musk (who is just as much a social media influencer as a businessman) caused shares of a cryptocurrency to shoot up. Also, many people base their entire lifestyles and purchasing habits on their favorite influencers.

I think humans have this need to be a part of something or to be a part of a group. For some reason people don’t like to be different, so they follow others. Social media influencers wield their power because people want someone to follow and show them how live a “good life”, whether it’s actually good for them or not. People have a lot of blind trust and faith in these social media influencers and that they are telling them what to do is right. Humans have enabled it to a point where now, these social media influencers will make statements and people take them as facts instead of opinons.

I feel like humans really like to follow someone who is eccentric or entertaining and join others in following someone who is popular. It creates a sense of in-group or out-group just based on the person someone follows, and sometimes following celebrity can turn into a cult. Even if it doesn't become this extreme, people like to follow popular figures to be part of a social trend and belong to some sort of group or idea. This idea can influence many aspects of a person's life.

I don’t think it is unfair at all. I think social media influencers create this atmosphere where they only post things when they are at their very best. This causes followers to compare themselves at their worst to an influencer that only shows themself at their past. It’s just a toxic atmosphere that’s bound to cause things such as eating disorders, depression, and so many other problems. Many of the influencers also get plastic surgery or implants to reach this stereotypical ideal body type. So they are literally making the ideal body type almost impossible to reach.

I think it is a little unfair to say that because I feel like it is an overgeneralization. Social media influencers can have a very positive impact on their audience's lives, depending on the influencer. Many spread positivity all the time and offer advice and encouragement that is much more impactful than just words to their audience. However, other social media influencers also often degrade mental health, mostly through setting subliminal standards in appearance or lifestyle that can make the audience not feel like they are good enough. So, the statement is not completely untrue, but it is an overgeneralization.
