It is a multifunctional building, so it houses various stages and artistic spaces such as the Palace of Fine Arts Museum and the National Museum of Architecture. The first one permanently exhibits 17 mural works by seven national artists executed from 1928 to 1963, among them Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco, being the oldest in the country dedicated to national plastic production. It is also the headquarters of the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Opera Company (Opera de Bellas Artes), the National Dance Company and the Folkloric Ballet of Mexico by Amalia Hernández.

The project that gave rise to the palace is located in the preparation of the celebrations of the centenary of the beginning of the Independence of Mexico, a period in which, among other actions, the government of Mexico decided to undertake various public works. In 1897, the government of Mexico bought from María del Carmen Alatriste Cuesta - mother of Carmen Serdán and Aquiles Serdán - the building of the Grand National Theater of Mexico, in addition to other houses arranged in the current layout of Cinco de Mayo Avenue.2 Originally The Mexican engineer Gonzalo Garita and the Italian architect Adamo Boari presented projects to the authorities in 1900 in order to expand and remodel the Great National Theater, which were accepted by the government in May 1901, Garita working on the extensions and structures and Boari the work of the facades. By government decision, these projects changed in their entirety towards the construction of a new building in a new location, ordering the demolition of the Great National Theater.
