Florian and Emilia start the story by crossing paths with each other. Emilia was being attacked by a Russian soldier, and Florian saves her. Florian is German and will do anything to find his sister, even if it meant being a traitor to the Nazi's. Emilia is Polish, a huge problem to the Russians and Germans. They find refuge in a barn where they meet 5 others, Joana a nurse, Klaus a small boy she found along the way, Ingrid, Heinz, and Eva. Joana helps Florian with his injury. They eventually make their way to Gotenhafen. Florian tries to abandon Emilia and gives her a gun for her protection. She ends up following him and saves him from being attacked by a German soldier. Days later, the entire group reached a checkpoint with crowded refugees, most of them killed by a bomb. Blind Ingrid tests the ice on the river. More bombs are dropped, and they lose Ingrid. Joana tried her best to save her, but she drowned in the freezing water. Here is where they meet Alfre Frick. Alfred is a Nazi to be boarding the ship of refugees. Florian and Emilia board the ship with Joana being the nurse of the ship, where Emilia gives birth to her daughter Halinka. She thinks the baby is from a family she worked for, a boy named August. Turns out she was raped by the soldier that took her from the farm. The ship is attacked by a Russian Submarine with torpedoes. Florian, Joana, and Klaus make it on board a lifeboat where Emilia gives her baby to Florian. The boat broke into the water, and Heinz tried to make it on board but landed in the water and drowned. Emilia and Alfred make it onto a raft, where he learns that Emilia is Polish. He falls into the sea trying to kill Emilia. Florian and Joana end up getting married, and adopt Klaus and Halinka. She is a refuge in Nazi Germany in 1941 trying to escape the Russian forces. She is a nurse and plays a big part in which wounded soldiers get to board the ship. She ends up marrying Florian and adopts Emilia's child and the wandering boy Klaus. 
Florian: Florian was on a mission to find his sister while he was carrying an amber swan that he stole from the Amber room after discovering that his boss Erich Koch was using him to steal other arts. He cares for Emilia, who reminds him of his sister. Florian falls for Joana, and does anything to protect both Joana and Emilia. 
Emilia: Emilia is a 15 year old Polish girl. She was sent to Germany by her father to work on a farm and be protected from Poland. She is under the impression that the son she worked for was the reason she was pregnant, but it is found out that a Russian soldier was responsible. She gives birth to her daughter Halinka on the ship, but she saves her and gives her to Florian, the only person she seemed to trust throughout the story. 
Alfred: Alfred was a Nazi aboard the ship. He was very loyal to Hitler and his fellow soldiers. He does what he can to make sure he is greatly acknowledged. He dies after finding out about Emilia and tried to send her overboard, but ends up going over himself.

Many people are to escape Germany, but only of German heritage. She is approached by a Russian soldier. She she speaks Polish, unable to communicate to the soldier, he tries to kill her. This conflict is resolved when Florian comes in and shoots him, saving Emilia. 

Joana, Klaus, Heinz, Eva, and Ingrid are being hunted by German Nazi's. They take stick together and do what they can to stay hidden. This is resolved by Florian helping them out. When he showed the soldiers his papers, it was revealed that he was a fellow soldier out on a mission and he wanted this group to help him. 

Emilia faces a huge conflict all throughout the story. She is Polish, basically a number one priority to get rid of by both Russians and Germans. This is shown by the group of refugees doing anything to make sure they stick together. Though the story is a work of fiction, the sinking of the ship Wilhem Gustlof most definitely is not a work of fiction.
