         <description><![CDATA[<div>I havent experienced what Kaoutar tells on her video, when she was at school. For avoiding this situation, the personnal dictionary in multiple languages works, as we have noticed at the end of the video, different students could use them, giving as result an enrichment od the learning environment.<br>In my experience, since I teach in bilingual programmes, our bilingual team encourages student to create a trilingual dictionary (spanish, english and french, that are the languages learnt in our school). This personnal multilingual dictionary is filled during the 4 compulsory courses of the secondary education. At the end, they realize how they have learnt during this period of time.&nbsp;<br>I would include the languages they use at home, in the case of inmigrants, for example, thanks to Kaouatar and Jérôme. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I am a teacher in a Bilingual school (we call it Minority school) in Greece. Children are very much allowed to use their first language (which is turkish language) in every day school life. However, since all the children use the same language as their first language, I see that they don't try to learn the language of the state (which is greek). In that case children at the age of 12 find a lot of difficulties in expressing themselves in greek even if they were taought greek for 6 years already . </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have never experienced this situation, but I understand the difficulties that arise when two languages are spoken. Using the two languages is useful for maintaining one's identity, but the teacher must find strategies to prevent pupils who are not fluent in the second language from feeling excluded. I think using a multilingual dictionary is really a great tool.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I haven't experienced a similar situation because I'm Italian and I studied in Italy. Now I am a teacher and I work in a classroom in which there are 3 children who speak another mother tongue. I have never prohibited to them to use their languages at school but, at the same time, I have never allowed to use their mother language in the classroom. And this isn't good: in these last years I miss a lot of the richness that these children could bring to school with their diversity. Therefore, from now on, I must encourage them to use their mother tongue in the classroom and I will surely do the suggested activities: they are really interesting. Besides, I can say something about my own experience: when I was a child, I was very curious about foreign languages. In the town where I live, every summer, took place, and it takes place nowadays, an international handball festival ( "Coppa Interamnia"; Interamnia means that belongs to my town, Teramo). During a week, in the month of July, came young handball teams from all over the world. I remember that I went around the city, with a small copybook, and I asked to these young foreign players if they could write for me some words in their mother tongue, in their alphabet. This copybook was full of incomprehensible Chinese and Arabic words, but I was&nbsp; very proud of it. Children are very curios and this helps them to learn everything. This funny flashback also  encourages me to improve multilingual activities in my classroom. Very good!</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have not personally experienced the situation where I was not allowed to use my home language in the classroom, as I went to school in Lithuania and we had very few bilingual pupils. However, in London I teach in a very multicultural nursery school. I do allow and encourage pupils to use their home language in the classroom. Normally, I ask the parents to write down for me a few words in their home language. I display their writing in the classroom and try and teach other children simple words in different languages, e.g. greetings, counting, colours, simple everyday words, like snack, toilet, food, water, help,etc. I also use flashcards with different objects to support the pupils' understanding. </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

The best way to help them understand their language is welcome is asking their parents to translate something in their mother tongue and try to repeat it in front of the kids.          <description><![CDATA[<div>As I already told you during the MOOC, I was an emmigrant in France when I was 7 years old. It was very difficult to me because I didn't know any words in french and I couldn't communicate with other children. If some of them were kind to me and were willing to play, most of them bullied me and made fun of me. My older sister was at the same school, but not on the same schoolyard, because we weren't the same age. I wanted so baddly to speak with her during the breaks, but the adults kept us separated so we couldn't speak Portuguese with eachother. And, of course, in class, Portuguese was never allowed. Today, as a teacher in a multicultural school, I encorage my foreign students to speak in their native tongues and often ask them to teach me and the other colleagues some words. And I never forbite them to speak their own language. I'm very used to make multilingual dictionaries in my classes, with key words that are important for everyday subjects</div>]]></description>

It really helped students learn Italian, but also the other two foreign languages they studied (English and French). Besides, it became a incredible tool to have the students collaborate together, help each other when they didn't know a word in one of the languages required in the dictionary. She says she felt ashamed of her home language and thought it wasn't right to speak her home language. I think it has a very bad effect on children and it demotivates them. It also may cause them to hate school. Therefore, engaging different languages and allowing students to use their home language is a great opportunity for them!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I experienced a similar situation 12 years ago when I arrived in Italy and I was not able to speak Italian at all. I felt locked in a glass bell, from where I could see everything, observe, feel, but no one could hear or understand&nbsp; me when I spoke;&nbsp; it is like&nbsp; speaking without having voice. This is another way of "forbidding" to use your mother tongue , but very similar to that of children who cannot use their mother tongue at school.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;5 years ago I was teaching Economics in high school and in my classes were many foreigners that I used as "interpreters" for their conationals and they were very happy to do it and to speak their mother tongue. In this way they felt the link with their origins. &nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;Now I teach in primary school and my students are very curious to know words in my mother tongue.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

Was a hard time, cuz I felt alone and homesick. Then the time was passing by and I could improve another language, meet more people and make new friends. Was a great experience. I think that for kids, you can help them using cards with Picture about the things that you´r speaking or with the daily routine. with time and calm they will start feeling confortable and will start learning and understanding the foreign language too.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Some years ago I had and etwinning project to celebrate the European Day of Languages and we decided to translate and draw 10 words in the languages of the schools in the project. Among these there were Italian, English and French, the languages my students use at school, there was also Greek and Finnish. In that class there was a students whose grandparents are Greek and he was really very happy and of course involved in the activity because he thought the whole class, the teacher included, how to pronounce the words. This activity helped him to open up himself and gave him importance, he became more self-confident and the whole class had the experience of learning a different language even though only some words. below you can find the visual dictionary we created. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I vividly remember the one time I have seen something similar to Kaoutar's experience happen. My colleague in the kindergarden classroom was appalled that one of her students, a five year old native speaker of English, did not know how to say "fry pan" in Spanish. I thought, and still think, that her shock was ridiculous. Afterall, that's really specific vocabulary! On a personal level, this happens to me outside of school quite a bit. Although we live in Spain, I speak to my son exclusively in English and many people speak up and tell me I am confusing him or whatnot. I know, firsthand, how damaging comments against one's L1 can be. For this reason, I think we need to support all of our learners the best we can, and encourage literacy in their L1. </div>]]></description>

The students who are coming from the former portuguese colonies, also understand portuguese, although most of them have a specific dialetc. I allow them to speek it in my classes, and it´s always fun, because all of the colleagues (and myself!) want to learn with them!          <description><![CDATA[<div>I did write ...but I can't find my lines anymore, so<br>personally I have never seen or heard teachers forbidding their pupils to speak their language especially new arrived ones, we usually encourage them and the family to watch tv in Italian and to socialize with other families in order to integrate in the new Country and to learn the language to communicate and to study.<br>But at the same time we know it is fundamental for them to speak their mother tongue to keep their identity and culture that is a gift and very precious for the pupils' future and often I 'he suggested to use their language at home to study with parents as we all know that a competence in a language will become competence in other languages studied.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>I have no experience of a similar situation, but the daughter of a friend lived such situation few years ago. She told me it had been very hard for her. In this regard, I think multilingual dictionary could be an excellent resource, as it helps integration, valorising language diversity and helping students to respect children from different  countries and cultures.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think this is the central question: giving permission to speak. The real permission to speak is equivalent to giving dignity. Because when it comes to a foreign place it's all to be understood. Words change, the use of words changes, habits, customs, meanings and uses. The question is: why do I speak? For whom do I speak? What is done with my word? My word becomes a tool to do together, to try to understand, to courage common space and meaning to the word. So I, just arrived, in the minority, disoriented, I am included, listened to, respected, then I speak. When my word rebounds, it becomes a sound to be deformed, I use it in front of me without any effort with this worse without this word The question is: what context does my text find? A context with or against a context? Because the same condition of entering a new context even if you know the verbal language (the words) poses the same question and the same fears because words are reliable when they communicate, when they inform, when they anticipate actions: when they are transparent and become tool for us a little 'more extended. Words are sounds, or noises, which are best avoided if they are left flowing, manipulated, judged, mocked, used to tangle the action and break it: then it is better to keep quiet, because talking is making noise.<br><br></div><div>This situation becomes more marked if context and verbal and written language are new: levels of complexity and tangible comprehension needs are integrated. Credible in the ways, in the tones, in the agitations. Wherever the inclusion passes into the credibility of the speakers: looks, mimicry, posture, silence and smiles are universal human.<br><br></div><div>Everywhere the whole body speaks and says: yes, you can talk, I'm interested. However, if this is not the case, the body and the words contradict each other and communicate limited or denied permits, in a strong and clear way.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The place where I’m currently teaching is far from any city or huge metropole and we don’t have refugees, only immigrants from Brazil or Eastern Europe. However, such cases are so rare that such problem has never truly come up. Nevertheless, I find it sad that students are not allowed to use their home language when it could be an asset for the classmates, teachers and school; if there are more speakers of the same foreign language they could even gather, help one another or even offer classes to all interested within the school community. That would be a great way to make them feel welcome and integrated, even more willing to excel in the host country.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my school,&nbsp; it is quite common to have Peruvian students (among others) who don't speak the language of schooling.&nbsp; A few weeks ago a newly arrived student from Peru came to my class (the third and last year of lower secondary school). She was a couple of years older than the other students, she sat silently on a chair, alone, and waited. I asked her name, where she was from (at first in English, then in Italian and finally in Spanish).&nbsp; She answered in Spanish and said that in Peru children study only a little English, that she couldn't understand. I thanked her and I thought I had to work hard to teach her in eight months what I do normally teach in three years...! The lesson started, and I asked my students to talk about their holidays. When it was her turn I asked her first in English, then in Spanish, about her holidays, and I reassured her and told her she could speak in Spanish. Since the students of this class study Spanish as a second foreign language, I told her that she was really precious because she could be of help in Spanish whilst the other classmates could help her in learning English...and Italian!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Last year, in a 5th grade class, I was showing a video on Cantherville Ghost to the children on Halloween day : I didn't find the English version at once so , on the spur of the moment , I decided to run it in Ukranian ( I came across this version searching on the web ) as I had an Ukranian pupil in that class  . The reault was incredible : that pupil , newly arrived  and who had passed the two months in our school in complete silence and no interaction at all with other students , as soon as heard his own language spoken in the video started to smile and than to speak in his language : of course we didn't understand  precisely what he was saying but we all were very happy that Arthur had stated to speak !! </div>]]></description>

Forgive me the provocative question!</div><div>As I am neither a refugee nor a migrant but only&nbsp; a person who has had to metaphorically “migrate” from the deductive kind of learning&nbsp; to the inductive one (you can infer it from my language passport) I can only judge by my experience as a cultural migrant in order to respond to the given question. No doubt to allow students to use their own language in the classroom helps them to feel welcomed (and this is very important),&nbsp; however it seems to me this permission could slow down the learning process. Over and above coming from a kind of a deductive learning I am a very shy person too, nevertheless I still do a lot of full immersion to learn how to communicate in English and I also am glad to!&nbsp; If I could I would speak all the time in English despite not being good at speaking.&nbsp; I do regret not being able to have any&nbsp; chance to.</div><div>&nbsp;Of course, as a language learner, there is &nbsp; need me to lack emotional stress: a long time ago, at the beginning of my learning about English as an adult, an English teacher scolded me by screaming at me:&nbsp; “shut up, let your classmates answer”. It was so both distressing and humiliating that I left the course despite being forced to pay the fee for the whole school year. It have taken several years before I found the courage to attend another English language course (online, of course!) TO SUM UP I THINK THE VERY IMPORTANT THING IS TO PUT THE LEARNER AT EASE, REGARDLESS BOTH OF THE TEACHING METHOD AND OF THE LANGUAGE TOO.<br>(to be continued with a picture on a welcoming teacher)<br><br></div>]]></description>

I think they should be encourage to it and helped to feel not alone. There is also the case of native learners that normally speak a dialect outside the school and have a lot of difficulties to speak naturally the language of schooling. On the other hand, I am also convinced that the language of schooling is important to create a common understandable language to study and to communicate. </div><div>I have never experienced a situation as a teacher like the one described in the video. Only once I had a foreign student coming from Serbia that spoke very little Italian. I have some other foreign students, but they all speak Italian.  I always make them share some words in their language with the class. They are always proud of it.  I was myself a foreign student many years ago in three different situations. I did not feel bad and nobody told me not to use my language. It was me that tried to use the schooling language, even if I had always to learn it from the beginning!</div>]]></description>

         <title>IRENE – GUARDA, PORTUGAL             As a foreign languages’ teacher to Portuguese students, I strongly believe that they can really benefit from using their own mother tongue in their learning process. As a matter of fact, I often use it to explain what’s quit similar and what’s absolutely different on the two languages (either they&#39;re studying French or Spanish), so that they can easier understand these differences and this resemblances. This way, the mother tongue plays a key role in the learning process of a foreign language. Beside this, sometimes I also use it to translate some sentences or some ideas from French or Spanish to Portuguese, so that they can understand better a text or a message. I confess that I use the Portuguese language to explain things especially in the beginning of a foreign language study (the first three years, mostly), because it’s when they’re not yet able to think in a foreign language and to express their thoughts in that new language. </title>

All the people in my village spoke the local dialect, which is actually a language. Nevertheless, at that time,  it was felt that speaking the dialect at home would have made learning Italian more difficult. The dialect was meant to be a sort of a second-class language. The result is that I've lost part of my roots. If we truly believe in equal status of languages that should not happen.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;Personally, I have never experienced a similar situation, but I can talk about my father’s childhood. Of course, my father was Italian, but, when he was four years old, his family (six children + their parents) emigrated from Southern Italy to Northern Italy.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>My father’s family was quite poor; my grandmother did not work and my grandfather was just a male nurse who worked many hours every day. Futhermore, my grandparents’ education level was quite low… my grandmother loved to read, to write and to tell wonderful stories, mixing freely the Italian language and her dialect.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>When my father was a child and started attending his primary school, he could only use Italian; every dialect was strictly forbidden. The Southern Dialects, even the Southern strong accents, were&nbsp; condemned by the teachers and judged negatively. They were considered as a distinguishing mark that, in general, revealed a low and problematic socio-economic situation.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;At school, my father often felt ashamed and embarrassed, he did not like his teachers at all.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>From the beginning, his story taught me that, as teachers, we need to allow our students to use their languages or dialects in the classroom without judging them. The knowledge of another language/other languages has to be acknowledged, valorized (especially at school) and considered as an advantage, a real strenght.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>From one hand, It is important to promote a multilingual environment and to develop language/cultural awareness, from the other hand, it is vital to explicit the weaknesses and the limits that characterize a monolingual environment. From my perspective, the next step should be represented by the <em>official use</em> of these beautiful languages in real tasks, school exercises and tests.&nbsp;<br>Creating a multilingual dictionary is an amazing idea!</div>]]></description>

A good teaching and learning practice could be the creation of a multilingual dictiorany translating from and into the official language of the education system.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>I have never experienced a situation similar to Kaotar one and I think such a situation could be avoided remembering that each language contains not only distinct surface features such as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, but also a shared skill and a central operating system that is common across languages. When working in language diverse classrooms knowledge of the common underlying proficiency can help teachers communicating more effectively with students who do not speak the main language of instruction, and this is the reason why teachers should evaluate and enhance students’ knowledge of their mother tongue.<br><br></div>]]></description>

The multilingual dictionary can be a good idea for enhancing students' language, identity and culture.

I think it must be really frustrating and hard to overcome.<br>In my school we received students from Colombia or Ecuador so spanish is not an issue and we allow them to use spanish as much as they need until they know how to speak catalan. However, in my CLIL classes I'll try the multilingual dictionary, I think it could be great.</div>]]></description>

My parents were Portuguese and we spoke Portuguese at home.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I must admit that I experienced the opposite, i.e. I was asked to only use the L2 (Italian, my native language) with my students, even though they were very young and did not know a word of Italian. In fact, when I first started teaching in an Italian/English bilingual program, there was the idea that Italian speaking teachers had to speak only in Italian to students, even during the delivery of other subjects and topics. I found this request quite unrealistic and counterproductive, especially here in Australia, which is a multicultural but mainly ‘monolingual’ country where the average person’s mindset is ‘monolingual’ (i.e. their brain initially seems only wired for English). Moreover, with young children who are still learning the basics of their native language and their ‘world’, visual cues and body language are often not enough to make meaning and get across new concepts, thoughts and ideas. I believe that, in a bilingual classroom with inexperienced language learners, there are times when the use of the L1 (English in my case) is legitimate as it is necessary to build rapport with the students and increase their chance to understand important abstract concepts.</div>]]></description>

I think it's really an effective proposal to involve all students and improve their language and intercultural awareness. In my teaching experience, I always tried to promote all students' languages also because I had a bilingual Primary School teacher. She emigrated fron Italy to Corsica with her family when she was a child and came back home at twenty years old. In the '70s she experienced a foreign language teaching Project in the school I attended, so I picked up a little French an started to love languages. Teachers can deeply influence their students' attitudes.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When I was a teenager, I attended an English course in London. We were not allowed neither speak our language nor to sit near a student from our country or speaking my language. I found it useful to improve my English. I had such experiences also in German and in Switzerland. One Italian student in Gottingen once asked me to speak in Italian, because no other student could do it. I answered that it was a waste of time and money going abroad to improve a foreign language and speak his mother tongue. However, after a full German immersion lasted more than a month, I did need to speak another language to have a rest. The Italian student was not more in Germany and I spoke French with a French student. So, I can understand better how important is to allow foreign students to speak their language at school.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As I have already written in module 2, some colleagues of mine are often used to have quite negative attitudes towards&nbsp; students using their native language in school.<br>&nbsp;Perhaps the fact that the teachers can't speak or&nbsp; understand only very little of their mother-tongues is the reason why they are uncomfortable about pupils using&nbsp;them in class. Believing that mixing languages in school could be confusing to them is another reason too. In my school I organize regular meetings with teachers with foreign students in classroom to promote their inclusion allowing them to speak their mother tongue too.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I teach Spanish and I let my students use their mother tongue, since I have learned this by experience. On the other hand, many years ago when I started teaching English in Lima, Peru (for Spanish speakers), it was banned to let students talk in Spanish or make any comparison between English and Spanish. Some topics required this because it would take longer time to be acquired by students, but teachers had to follow the hints of the curriculum being used. Fortunately, in the early 90s in the United States appeared a trend that said that it was a good idea to use the native language to explain some grammar points. I think your native language is your point of reference and the logic your brain uses, so it is there to help, not to disturb. And teachers have to be instructed when at college to apply the resources students already have. In this case, students´ native language.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was always allowed to use my home language.... but sometimes people don't understand me, so I had to speak another language in order to be understood and this motivated me to study well the language because I had this need to talk!<br>Actually I teach Italian to foreign people and usually I ask my students to speak only in Italian during lessons but if I see any difficulty or stressful situation  that is negative for the learning environment, I allow my students to speak in another language. I allow them to speak in another language also when I want other students to understand how difficult it's to learn another language.<br>I think that a teacher needs to understand when a student what to speak his/her language because he/she needs to or just because of laziness. Teachers should learn to understand students' potentials and concrete limits.<br>I usually don't agree when my Italian as second language colleagues say that we are not allow to talk in our students' languages. It depends, it's important to be flexible!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have a young student in the first form this year who can speak only her mother tongue (she’s from India) and cannot understand Italian or English. She’s been in Italy for three months and she’s still in the stage when a pupil listens and pays attention but is not ready yet to start saying even a few words in the language of schooling. I think that the idea of a multilingual dictionary may be useful in this situation, I will suggest using it to my colleagues and hope this will help my students to fell at ease in the class. The girl is trying to do her best and we teachers should do the same.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My first experience in this sense I had it personally when I returned to Italy from Switzerland (I was born in Switzerland). In Switzerland, already in the years 1960-1970 there was a school for Italians. We were discriminated against by the population, but the school had the tools to help us. Returning to Italy I thought I would be very well. And instead ...<br>It was truly paradoxical. I returned to my homeland, of origin of my family, in the city of my parents and I HAVE BEEN TREATED AS A FOREIGNER! I could not say the words in German, every time I accidentally wrote them in the notebook, the teacher traced large red lines. My teacher could not bear the spelling errors given by the difference between German and Italian. A real trauma. One day I told my parents that I do not want to go to school anymore! I was 7 years old. Then a kind teacher helped me without asking my parents for a penny. But my class teacher has never helped me! I was different from the others because I was not from the village and I did not know how to speak in dialect! My little Italian accent makes me exclude even from spontaneous play. I suffered a lot for this. But .... in the long run, i gave that extra charge to face all the obstacles of life with grit and character without ever giving up. And it allowed me to better understand the labors of children arriving at school catapulted from another country.</div>]]></description>
