Arnie the Doughnut is a story about a doughnut who is unaware that dougnuts are meant to be consumed. When a man purchases the doughnut for breakfast, the two form an unlikely friendship when Arnie reveals that he does not want to be eaten. The text is very interactive and engaging which makes it perfect for reading comprehension strategies. Prior to reading the text with the students, teachers should simply show them the cover and ask students to predict what they believe the story will be about based on context clues.

Comprehension strategies are different techniques and procedures used to guide students through reading as well as test their comprehension knowledge. Being a good reader goes beyond fluency, and requires a student to comprehend and analyze the text they are reading. If readers do not use reading strategies they will have difficulty applying texts to the outside world. Reading is an interactive process that involves both the student and the text itself. The most successful readers are ones who have a personal interest in the text that they are reading.
