It empowers people to think profoundly and responsibly about their choices and actions. If someone makes a bad decision then they can pay for it with their own suffering. From this suffering one could learn how to problem solve. If someone makes an ethical decision they will be rewarded well. If you don't tell the whole truth, or if you warp it to prevent the feeling of distress then I think It is okay.
