Ruth is the deuteragonist of Raisin in the Sun. She is the mother of Travis and wife to Walter. She is a strong-willed woman, who is often conflicted on what she should do involving money. She is always trying to keep the family together along with Mama. She is hard-working, driven, and even sometimes quipy.

Ruth is shown in the book to work hard and will work hard for her and her family. In the book, it states, “Lena—I’ll work…I’ll work twenty hours a day in all the kitchens in Chicago…I’ll strap my baby on my back if I have to and scrub all the floors in America and wash all the sheets in America if I have to—but we got to MOVE! We got to get OUT OF HERE!!” P. 140 This shows Ruth's willingness to work for a goal that would put her family in a great position

Post Three- Ruth's Mishaps

In the book, I often feel for Ruth because of the predicaments she is put in. In multiple occasions, she has been given the short end of the stick such as when she got pregnant and when Walter spent all of their money on the business, which turned out to be a farce. Her strengths are her diligence, resilience, and is a family first woman. Her weakness is that she is too strict when it comes too Travis. She was reluctant to give Travis measly quarters.

Post Four- Ruth's Depiction

The art I chose is a woman carrying a huge weight labeled "stress". This represents Ruth because of the many issues in the she and her family have to deal with. In the art, the woman is seen struggling with the weight. In the book, Ruth is presented with the problem with her pregnancy. She is conflicted on whether or not she should keep the baby. This caused a great deal of stress on her and the family.

The poem I chose was "Madam and Her Madam" by Langston Hughes. This poem relates to Ruth because of the hard-working nature if the woman. Lines 1-8 relates to Ruth's routine on working extremely hard for her family. Ruth in the book has been shown to make food for the family, clean the apartment, and provide aid for the family.

Had to get breakfast,
Dinner, and supper, too—
Then take care of her children
When I got through.

Wash, iron, and scrub,
Walk the dog around—
It was too much,
Nearly broke me down.

Post Seven- Explanation

Ruth is a devoted wife to Walter, however their marriage has been tested numerous times. Walter often makes questionable decisions in order to provide for his family. Line 2 relates because Walter genuinely cares about Ruth, but his antics demonstrate a poor way of showing it. Line 5 relates because it shows Ruth's reluctance to comfort Walter after his financial fiasco.

Post Eight- Theme

The main theme of this book is ambition. In the book, each member of the Younger family all want to acquire or accomplish something. Beneatha wants to go to medical school, Walter wants to run a business, and Mama wants to move out of the household. In the text, it states, “I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live…” p. 34. This shows that Walter wants what is best for him and his family. It also shows that the family is always striving for something more

Post Nine - Theme

The main theme of the movie, Fences was perception. In the movie, the character's have different viewpoints on their situations and that is the main way the plot moves along. For example, Troy thinks that the fences around him are to protect him, while Rose fells as though the fences around are to keep her inside and unable to escape. Rose and Troy have an argument about the ideology of the fences.

Post Ten- Comparison

Fences and A Raisin in The Sun are similar stories that deal with family issues and how they resolve them. Both stories deal with a father who genuinely cares about his family, but they have a strange way of showing it. Walter and Troy are both trying to do what's best for their family and often makes mistakes that make it seem as if they are doing the opposite.

However, there are key differences as well. Troy is often portrayed as a bad man who purposely hurts his family, while Walter is a good man who makes flawed decisions to help his family. Troy has no interest in progressing as a character and person, while Walter has the ambition to change, and mostly for the better of his family.
