The Philippine Eagle is a giant forest raptor endemic to the Philippines. It is considered to be one of the three largest and most powerful eagles in the world. Unfortunately, it is also one of the world’s rarest and certainly among its most critically endangered vertebrate species.

It's habitat are the forests of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. They nests on large, old growth dipterocarp trees of lowland forests. It represents a rare product of evolution, and has no close relatives left among the extant species of eagles. Losing them would mean an irreversible loss of a unique species. They are solitary and fiercely territorial birds, that feed on flying lemurs, squirrels, civets, snakes, hornbills, bats, and monkeys. The Philippine eagle is monogamous and lays a single egg every two years. The parents are reported to wait for their offspring to make it on their own before producing another.

The Philippine Eagle is the top predator of the Philippine tropical rainforest. It plays an important role in keeping the ecosystem in balance and provides an umbrella of protection to all other life forms in its territory.
