GENDER
Gender refers to the characteristics of women and men, girls and boys that are socially costructional. This includes norms, behaviors and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl and/or boy, as well as relationships with each other. In the story, the protagonist is a boy who is barely on the cusp of manhood. Over the course of the story, he transitions from being under a nanny's care to studying Greek and Latin with a tutor and dining with his parents. The boy becomes inclined to fill the role of a traditional male by acquiring the responsibility to be the provider of the family. The girls are also resorted to be playing with dolls, which poses the role of women in society, to be nurturing girls and women in future. Gender is also reflected through use of toys, where girls are expected to play with dolls and boys, such as the protagonist play with a toy deemed for boys, the rocking horse. Boy also receives conflicting messages from his parents about what manhood is. Gender is also reflected from the use of the author's perspective in storytelling. The author weighs in on critiquing the boy's mother's role as a mother and not so much towards the father despite stating that the father is not a role model. There is more pressure for women to be perfect parents and fulfill their traditional roles as women and parents. However, the mother takes on many traditional male roles such as making sure the family has enough money to spend. Masculinity is depicted as what the boy's father is and is what the boy is expected to become.

IDENTITY

Identity is essential in every story because before we know why the story takes place, we know who the characters are. Factors such as class,race, nationality and sex are considered to determine identity. In 'The Rocking-horse Winner', identity is influenced through means of the poor social status of the boy's family. They are poor people who cannot afford their lifestyle. It is because of who they are that conflict and journey of the story takes place. Being poor/not affording social status further influences the identity in the analysis of the character of boy when he is pressured by his mom to lose the riding horse and grow up, go to Eaton and be like his father. The boy refuses to quit and this tells us who the boy is and what challenges who he is. Their identity as a poor family is the driving force behind the meaning and intention of the story.

THE ROCKING-HORSE WINNER by D. H LAWRENCE

It is a short story about a boy who wishes to win money for his mother and he also believed that if he gets money the whispering noises in the house will shut up. He manages to get the money by riding his rocking-horse until he enters a state of frenzy and manages to see the name of the next horse that will win the major race, then he puts a bet on that horse and win. Unfortunately the whispering noises did not shut up instead they worsened.
