Trench warfare is a strategy used by armies when the efficacy of the opposing side's weapons is much stronger than their own defenses. Trench warfare consists of what it sounds like- dugout trenches- and was the primary type of warfare on the Western Front in World War I.

For most of the war, each side would mount attacks by first bombarding the enemy with artillery, then sending a group of infantry to attack. Unfortunately for the attackers, most trenches were deep enough that the bombardments did nothing except tell the enemy an attack was coming. Eventually, the Allies invented the tank, which helped quite a bit near the end of the war.

Trench warfare was mostly used when putting fortresses under siege until the Civil War. However, the trenches in World War I were much more extensive, and came about because armies simply couldn't stand up to the power of artillery and machine guns without some sort of protection.

Ultimately, trench warfare resulted in so many lives lost because of a combination of modern weaponry and outdated tactics. The tried-and-true strategy of marching your army over to the enemy and taking their territory simply didn't work in the face of artillery and machine guns.
