     Joycelyn and Julie sitting at the table making small talk.
     Magen and Nicole enter the scene. Magen introduces Nicole to the ladies. Nicole shakes hands with Julie and Joycelyn. Everybody orders their food. As Nicole is setting down her menu Julie notices her AIDS tattoo and asks her about it.
   
Julie : Oh I see your tattoo...what does the red ribbon stand for?
Nicole : It's for AIDS awareness
Julie : Ohhh....so does someone close to you have AIDS? ( Oh, so youre aware of AIDS? That's nice)
Nicole : Yes....I do. (I'm more than aware, I'm HIV positive)
Julie : (starts excessively sanitizing) So um, your gay?
Joycelyn : Julie - it's not just gay people who get AIDS. 1 in 7 people get diagnosed with AIDS and it is contracted from multiple reasons...like sexual contact, sharing needles, and direct contact with body fluids, except saliva.
Magen : Yeah it's true, and unlike people think you can't get it from seats or toilet seats, or using the shower after someone infected... the HIV virus can only live for a brief time outside the body.
Julie : So how did YOU get AIDS?
Nicole : I accidentally stuck myself with a needle while working in healthcare. My patient didn't realize they were HIV positive, and I guess I just wasn't being cautious enough.
Julie: Oh, so HE was gay?
Nicole: No, Julie... Rolls eyes
Julie : So how did you find out you had it?
Nicole : My job followed up with testing for several months after the accidental stick...on one of the follow up tests I came up HIV positive. 
Joycelyn : So did you start getting sick right away? What are your symptoms if you don't mind me asking.. 
Nicole : Really I've gone years without any symptoms. At first I had a couple week period that I felt like I had the flu...but other than that because we caught my diagnosis right away my doctors have closely monitored my condition to try to control it. Eventually, as HIV progresses into full blown AIDS I'll be looking at rapid weight loss, fever, tiredness, flu like symptoms, sores in my mouth or on my skin, possibly memory loss. 
Julie : So you're going to die?
Nicole : Mhm...And so are you...someday!
Magen : (tell about treatments and medications, ART [antiretroviral therapy]) So it is no longer a death sentence when someone is diagnosed with aids. 
Nicole : There are so many medical advancements now...Like PEP, (post-exposure prophylaxis) means taking antiretroviral medicines (ART) after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected. Or even just the availability of HIV tests, they can be done at clinics, you can even purchase one at the drug store. People just being more aware has significantly declined the numbers of those infected
Julie : So I'm confused...is it AIDS or HIV?
Joycelyn : Well it's both right?
Magen : Correct, it progresses in stages. It starts out as acute HIV, then it's next stage is chronic HIV. People can actually have HIV for 10 or more years before it progresses to AIDS. Those that are getting treatment can live decades after their diagnoses. 
Joycelyn : Wow, I had no idea! I always thought that once someone contracts AIDS they are instantly on their way out. I feel so humbled meeting you and realizing that treatment has really come a long way. 
Julie : Uh yeah...Waitress! Can I get that quail now!

There’s a newer drug that is an Antiretroviral medication, ART for short. It works by combining drugs that can attack the virus in different ways and stops it from spreading in the body. It’s not a cure, but as long as you manage your HIV, you should expect a long life.
