The subject of his song is going through a breakup. In an interview with… he stated that he wrote the album in its entirety at his home in Malibu while dealing with his first ever “real breakup” (cited in Gonzales 1). That makes this the occasion of the song. As he is going through this breakup, the audience is himself. The song is him trying to find a way to cope with the feeling of heartbreak, and he is debating whether or not he should cry for help. Lines 5 and six gives us a sense of imagery of his newfound reality. The next lines are him stating that no one is checking up on him, and he doesn’t feel the need to ask. The drinking and not caring about it means that as long as he is finding a way to mask what he is currently feeling, it doesn’t matter what the way is. He has given up on that fact that he will feel better with time so he is finding temporary solutions to feel something else. He emphasizes his sadness, loneliness, and hopelessness in the chorus. The first half goes “I’ve got way too much time to be this hurt/Somebody help it’s getting worse/What do you do with a broken heart?/Once a light fades everything is dark." This contradicts what he said earlier when he states “No one even has to know/I’m dealing with it on my own." It gives the feeling that he wants to talk to somebody about it, but he doesn’t know who or how to. The tone in the first verse to the chorus shifts from a loneliness that he wants to a loneliness that he does not want. He’s starting to admit defeat with himself and he’s asking for help. The second part of the chorus goes “Way too much whiskey in my blood/I feel my body giving up/Can I hold on for another night?/ What do I do with all this time, yeah?” He is becoming completely hopeless at this point. This is the point when people are panicking so much that they do not know what to do with oneself. Klein’s usage of words give the affect of a journal entry, where he is writing down his deepest emotions right at that minute. Line 5 in the second verse goes "I'm praying but it's not enough." This correlates with the purpose in that he is trying to find a way to relieve himself of the pain of heartbreak, which is the praying, but it doesn't seem to be working according to him. Line 6 in the second verse goes "I'm done, I don't believe in love." Klein has written many songs about love and heartbreak. In fact, the whole album that this song is in is about breaking up. It would make sense that he is feeling that type of way by how often he writes and sings about it. The bridge relates to both lines 5 and 6. It goes "I drive circles under street lights/Nothing seems to clear my mind/I can't forget, get this out of my head so/I drive chasing Malibu nights/Nothing seems to heal my mind/I can't forget." He is, yet again, finding another way to clear his head and feel better but his mind is so clogged up with his pain. Him giving more than one way of trying to feel better makes him credible when he says that he is trying to figure things out in his head, so it makes sense as to why he feels like giving up and should just let his emotions happen. Another added bonus is the fact that Klein is from Malibu, and he stated in the earlier interview that he spent most of his time at home creating his album and songs (cited in Gonzales 1).
