LIVING CONDITION - Ou Yukang

Base on the evidence from my variable sources i have concluded that teenagers' living condition during world war 2 were very harsh as they often did not have enough food and are malnourished as most of the food are taken away by the Japanese during raids. There is also a limit of food that people can buy due to rationing conducted by the Japanese but before the war everyone had enough food for themselves and are few people who are malnourished.During to war some needed to plant food in their school or even foraging for it in the forest in order to feed themselves or their family.

People also had to live in fear during world war 2 to the point that some even fear to go out of their home as they are afraid they they will be considered suspicious and get captured and tortured or killed by the Japanese. One of the harsh tortures that people fear is water treatment. It involves soldiers filing your up with water then stomping on you. So teenagers dared not go out but they still have to do it in order to survive so they have to live in constant fear in hope that they will not be caught.

Based on the information that I have collected from the historical investigation, the changes that happened were many.

Before the Japanese occupation food was relatively affordable and common for most people. However, the Japanese occupation changed many things. Among the changes, the Japanese implemented a rationing system to control the supplies of food like rice and other essential items.

After a while, food became scarce and food in the black market became very expensive due to inflation. Due to the price of food, teenagers suffered from malnutrition and had to grow their own food to prevent starvation. People had to grow food in any plot of land they could find, so they turned playgrounds and fields into vegetable gardens.

Under colonial rule, teenagers and their families could have a variety of dishes to enjoy. But during the Japanese occupation, they could only have cheap vegetables prepared in different ways.

Teenagers were able to fend off starvation but still suffered from malnutrion due to lack of variety and non-nutritious food.Teenagers couldn't buy food without a rationing card so they had to think about what they buy and remember to bring their card unlike before.

Based on the information I have gathered from the Internet about the Education in Singapore during and before the Japanese occupation, teenagers and students had to adapt to changes in the education system

Before the Japanese occupation, teenagers were learning under the British Education which consisted often students learning English in school. The teenagers were required to learn the English language and they used this knowledge to study other subjects.

During the Japanese occupation, teenagers were forced to learn under the Japanese education system, everything they studied in school were in Japanese, every morning they would bow towards the emperor during assembly.Chinese students were discriminated by the Japanese because when the Japanese attacked China the Chinese in Singapore were giving the Chinese army funds and a lot of Japanese soldiers lost their lives to the Chinese army. Some Chinese students were not allowed to go to school as their parents feared they would be mistreated.

Daily Life
From the evidence I have collected from Changi Museum and the Internet, there was a change in teenagers' daily life during the Japanese occupation.

Before the Japanese occupation, people were living peacefully under British rule. Teenagers did not live in fear. They were also in no danger of being arrested at any time. The races were treated equally.

But during the war, Japanese occupied Singapore. It was renamed Syonan-To, Light of the South. Teenagers began to fear their new rulers. They were in danger of being arrested by the Japanese at every street corner or at any time.

The Chinese community was persecuted and were terrorized by public beheadings and other forms of torture. The Indian community was by and large left alone.

The Japanese also frequently did searches of houses. During these searches, women would go into hiding as they did not want to be the soldiers' comfort women.
