Tyler The creator has always received backlash and skepticism throughout his career for his homophobic and controversial lyrics/ words regarding the LGBTQ community. But as it turns out the artist himself IS queer. in 2015 Tyler insinuated to be a part of the community in his album CherryBomb by saying "harder than coming out to conservative Christian fathers". Some fans brushed this off as him not talking about himself, but the general fact that coming out is hard. But as of 2017, Tyler confirmed his sexuality to be gay or bisexual with his hit album Flower Boy. In the song "I ain't got time' he says "next line has like Woah. I have been kissing white boys since 2004". Now a commonly known fact about Tyler is that he is into white men.

I like this lyric because it shows a side of Tyler being vulnerable and in love. He's a silly person with a tough exterior so it's nice to see he has these human emotions rather than anger.
When he says he sees this person behind his eyelids is referring to constantly thinking of them. It's as if the thought of this person is the default background in his mind. And he wants to stay asleep so he can always be with them if not physically and mentally. Then he asks if they follow the rules of the road while crossing the street of his mind even though she's not actually walking around in his head.

Tyler the creator, has opened doors for himself and others by being an openly queer, black rap artist. Tyler is not the basic cookie-cutter hip-hop artist which some might be critical of but personally, I think he's made it more acceptable for up-and-coming queer artists to be themselves in whatever industry or genre they're pursuing. He did this by growing a loyal audience who hung on to every release before coming out. And by that point, fans have been following him or years and just accepted him.

Tyler Okonma got his stage name Tyler, the Creator from his MySpace username in 2007. He added the creator to the end since he was a new artist looking to connect to other artists, and the name just stuck. Tyler says Q-tip and his solo work really inspired his own music but the stylings of his early group Odd Future is what really shines through in all his music.
Tyler says what truly pushed him to continue on his solo music career was his trip to Europe and bumping into Pharell Williams in a recording studio. Pharrell had always been someone Tyler looked up to for some sort of male figure. So having his idol believe in him was all he needed to "quit the games" and get serious. “I’m now a young entrepreneur all because I believed you when I said I could be,”

My first taste of good music was almost 4 years ago at the start of COVID. At the time Tyler's album Flower Boy was resurfacing on TikTok and getting a lot of attention, so of course being a new music listener I plugged in my Airpods and hopped on the trend. I immediately fell in love with his style of composing, most of his songs have a feel of multiple songs and different vibes in just one song which is good for my low attention span. After enjoying tFlower Boyand started to venture out into different artists. I credit Tyler for starting my music journey and I still choose to put on Flower Boy to this day.

Tyler said he hates living in Hawthorne California and I am glad that "Unlike most people, I grew up with, I got out". Different from other artists specifically rappers, Tyler's location didn't have an effect on his career and music, it it did make him work harder. He then encourages young people to not let their background impede their dreams.

Tyler the creator's style is easily recognizable on social media and the streets due to his popularity and it being so unique. The staple pieces of A Tyler outfit are a plain tee or button-up underneath a swear vest or sweater along with straight-leg pants and loafers/ dress shoes. As well as a hat, usually an ushanka which his brand makes), a baseball, or a newsboy hat. back in his fowerboy era, the common fit was a plain of straight-leg jeans or jorts paired with a brightly colored and or stripped tee with mid-length socks and Converse specifically the golf le fleur collaboration.

Tyler often makes alternative album covers by supporting artists like Lewis Rossignal, Gregory Ferrand and Mark Ryden. In an interview Ferrand says Tyler actually reached out to him wanting to work on a commission from him. The piece they created is the 2nd cover to "Call me if you get lost" which depicts Tyler in a iconic Tyler outfit holding suitcases. He had the vision and Ferrand just executed it perfectly. He likes to portray the sound of his music with visual work even with that part of music dying out, I think it really adds to his aesthetic and character.

The most apparent genre and what most people would categorize Tyler's music as, is rap. He is considered a rapper even though he stated that he doesn't think you can plainly say what he makes is "rap"

When Igor won best rap album of the year Tyer expressed his disappointment that his "genre-bending" music didn't end up in the pop section. Igor plays with musical composition and doesn't have all that many rap verses. The sound of the album and most of his music in general (especially the popular songs) is a mix of funk, pop, hip-hop, and neo-soul and a little funk.

Tyler and others think the "urban" category in which only black pop artists are put is just a "separate but equal" pop category for talented nop rap POC artists. This makes many people including myself frustrated and disappointed.
