The Eastern and Western Ghats are mountain chains that lay near the coasts of India. The Easter Ghats lie along the east coast and the Western Ghats lie along the western coast. On a map the Ghats take the shape of a large "V." In the middle of this "V" lies the Deccan Plateau.
The Western Ghats rest much higher in altitude than the Eastern Ghats do. The Western Ghats have steep slopes and narrow valleys. The Western Ghats also get lots of heavy rain. This heavy rain influences their thick, hardwood forests, and tropical plants to grow.
The Eastern Ghats rest much lower in altitude than the Western Ghats and are much less wet too. There are also several rivers through the mountains that are covered by hardwood trees. Although the rivers rarely flood, it's a very unsafe place for travel. The rivers are very rapid and rocks often abruptly fall of cliffs.
The Eastern and Western Ghats were important to the Indians because it could be used as a shield from invaders coming from across the ocean. It could also be used as a wind barrier. This kept the Indians safe.

Northern India is home to the massive Thar Desert. The Thar Desert is made up of mostly sand and stone with huge sand dunes that stretch for hundreds of miles on end. It also contains tons of tiny rocks, and lacks plant life except for very little grass and some hardy shrubs. The heat is also intolerable
Along with plants, water is also very scarce in the Thar Desert. This is because rain is very rare and monsoons occasionally come with an intense storm. But because the conditions are so dry, dust storms become very common.
The Thar Desert also homes many animals. Birds such as quail, ducks, and geese settle there homes here. Along with birds, there are 45 different types of lizard and snakes. Gazelles also run along the sand with a long bounding stride.
The animals living in the Thar Desert are very important to the Indians. This is important because the animals make the soil more fertile. This makes it much easier to grow crops supplying food.

The Hindu Kush mountains block off India from almost all of the surrounding area. The mountains are a barrier between the Indus River valley and Afghanistan. These mountains are not as tall as the Himalayas, But they are still one of the tallest in the world. A few of the mountain peaks are 5 miles tall. Many of the peaks are unlivable because snow and ice permanently cover them. For over 1,000 years traders have used the Khyber pass to get to the valley. Invaders also used the pass but, many of them died. The Hindu Kush mountains are important to India because they worked as a wind block and an invader wall.

The Ganges River flows through most of the northern side of India, flowing from north to south. The river slithers through ice, rocks, and extraordinary valleys and mountains. It is one of the longest rivers in the world with 1,569 miles in length.
The Ganges River carries silt, bringing it down to the northern plains. As the river flows through the plains, it leaves the silt on the plains. Because of this, the northern plains hold some of the most fertile farmland in the world. This is very important to the indians because it gives them good farmland and a food supply.
Along with carrying silt, the Ganges River carries melted ice and water that flow down from the Himalayas. This leaves the Ganges with plenty of water. Sometimes, during rain season, the river can flood. As a result, many plants planted along the banks can be destroyed.
Along with the silt the river brings down, the Ganges river is also very important because of the religion that the Hindus follow. There is a god named Ganga where Hindus will worship her. According to google she is worshiped by "Hindus that believe bathing in the river causes the remission of sins and facilitates Moksha."

The water runs steep through the narrow canyons. Similar to most swimming pools, the river gets deeper as it flows into the valley.
This river is special for it's male name. Unlike any female names mostly used for India, the name "Brahmaputra" means "son of Brahma" The River has a length span of 1,800 miles. It may not break into the top 10 longest rivers in the world, but considered as one of the major rivers alongside the Amazon and Nile.

The Deccan Plateau is an area with lots and lots of flat lands combined to make it look like a triangle. The plateau has different lands. The volcanos strive in the flatter part of the land. It must have a huge impact of climate change in that area. "These rocks are among the world's oldest, dating back more than six hundred million years."
In the bumpier part of the Plateau, there, it has bushes and thin forests. The area there is usually wet so animals tend to survive there.
The Deccan Plateau is an important part in ancient India since the black soil is rich in iron and perfect for growing cotton while red and yellow soil lack minerals that are essential for farming uses.

The Indus River was born in the Himalaya Mountains. Like most rivers, the Indus River gets water by snow melting near the mountains. This runoff keeps the water at high rise.
Like the Ganges River, the Indus River carries silt from the mountains to the plains. Because of this, the Indus river contains some of the best farmland in the world.
The river's important because just like the Nile, the river is an important source of water for the farmland that lies along its banks. The Indus River is located in what is now Pakistan northwest India.
The length span of the river is 1,976 miles. "India retained the right to use of the western rivers for non-irrigation projects. According to google, The Indus River flows into Tibet, into Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of Pakistan. It is one of the seven sacred rivers of Hindus. It's important because the river is alongside the village side. They need the water possibility for irrigation, water works, and more.
