As the Indo Australian plate is the thicker oceanic plate, it slides under the lighter continental Burma plate. As the Indo -Aus plate is sliding, there are places where the plates stick together and are locked, and places where the plate continues moving, which is called creeping. Where the plates are locked, the lower oceanic plate pulls the continental plate down with it causing it to sink. The pressure and strress builds up. When the pressure is too much, the continental plate springs back, the pressure is released. The earthquake was originally recorded as 8.8 magnitude. In February 2005 scientists remeasured the estimate of the magnitude to 9.0. There were over 1.7 million people that were left homeless becuase of the tsunami, and over 5 million that needed emergency aid (food, water etc). There were 1,500 villages destroyed in Northern Sumatra. Much of the fishing industry was left devastated by the tsunami as boats, nets and fishing equipment was destroyed- about 60% of Sri Lanka's fishing fleet was destroyed. Many ports worldwide were ruined. There was a major loss of tourism in the year following the tsunami- Phuket's tourists dropped by 80%.
