Pre-Modern Globalization

The Silk Roads were vast networks of trade routes across between Asia and Europe, allowing the exchange of goods, ideas, cultures, and religions. These routes facilitated a profound level of pre-modern globalization as it connected distant religion and culture across Eurasia and beyond. Despite the luxury products such as silk being the main drivers of the development of these routes, the travellers were also drawn to the intellectual and cultural exchange occurring in the cities along the routes. The outcome of these extensive interactions was the emergence of diverse yet interconnected cultures, languages, and religions, profoundly shaping societies across both continents.

Advantages and Disadvantages: (Ivy Amistad)

Globalization can have a big impact on our future careers in both good and bad ways. One advantage is that it gives us more job opportunities. We can work with international companies or people from other countries without even leaving our own. For example, thanks to technology, we can join virtual teams and work with people around the world. Another benefit is that globalization helps us develop useful skills like communication, adaptability, and learning new languages. These skills make us more prepared and competitive when applying for jobs. It also allows us to meet and interact with people from different cultures, which can be an exciting and eye-opening experience.

However, globalization also has some disadvantages when it comes to careers. One major downside is that it increases competition for jobs. Since companies can now hire people from all over the world, it can be harder to get a job because you're competing not just with local applicants, but with people from other countries too. Another disadvantage is job insecurity. Some companies might move jobs to countries where labor is cheaper, which means people in your own country could lose their jobs. This can make certain careers less stable and harder to rely on in the long run.

Advantages and Disadvantages: (Winston Philip L. Meredor)

As a future programmer, globalization will make a major impact on my career. It will allow professionals like me to collaborate with people from other countries and cultures, which could result in me being more open-minded and flexible. Working for an international company can improve my communication skills as well. With the help of the internet, I can work from home, which gives me more time for myself and my family. Even more, I would have the opportunity to apply to countries that can offer a higher salary than my own.

On the other hand, globalization can increase the hiring standards of companies, since programmers from more countries can apply to different companies. It would be a competition among professionals who are truly talented. Since globalization connects us with other countries and people—bringing together different beliefs and values—this could result in misunderstanding and issues that might affect the company.

Advantages and Disadvantages: (Trixie Nicole M. Dumayas)

Globalization allows many opportunities to various professions as it allows the connection of knowledge and innovations. Being able to share concepts, ideas, practices, cultures, values, and technology across borders helps in learning from each other’s experiences. This leads to making better business and career decisions. Acquiring additional technical knowledge and skills also improves work efficiency. For example, people seek advice from colleagues in other countries or from people in online platforms with the same field of profession regarding how they managed a specific situation that they have encountered before. Another advantage of globalization is that it develops universal standards relating labour and tax laws and regulations. The uniformity of laws help protect employee rights and maintain acceptable practices for different work environments.

However, as globalization opens up numerous benefits, it also brings major problems. Employee exploitation is one of them, where the increased competition in the international workforce leads to increased demand and low supply of job opportunities. Thus causing cheaper labour being offered to employees just to secure employment. The outcome of employee exploitation eventually results in employees opting for cheap labor in places that have higher employee exploitation due to lax or non-existent labour laws. Moreover, there are unequal opportunities offered because there are situations in a global system wherein countries that are no longer able to provide certain goods or services may outsource production to other countries. This situation leads to removing employees in the company or industry, increasing unemployment and inequality in the country.

In 2019, the pandemic arrived, and we had to stop attending school. However, DepEd announced that learning must continue, so technology became more dominant at that time. It was used to keep education going. By 2022, when I entered senior high school, our school returned to full face-to-face classes. Even then, technology remained important, as we used our gadgets and internet to communicate and access more knowledge beyond our classroom. Teachers also used several apps and websites for lessons, quizzes, and announcements, allowing more time for discussions in our face to face sessions.

Colonial Globalization

The Age of Discovery, also known as the Age of Exploration, spanned from the 15th to the late 18th centuries, when European explorers embarked on sea voyages to find and explore other territories, leading to the beginnings of European colonialism and mercantilism. Developing maritime skills to sail across oceans and establishing colonies and global empires lead to the expansion of European empires. Thus, a significant growth of global trade networks transpired. Extensive cultural exchanges took place, notably the transfer of food crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and chillies from the Americas to other continents as well as the spread of Old World crops and Christianity globally through missionary efforts. This period profoundly reshaped the world by connecting previously differing regions under European dominance through conquest, commerce, and cultural interaction.

This marked the emergence of global institutions as a feature of post-war globalization, demonstrating the desire for international cooperation and diplomacy.
