Mrs. Icarus -Aarush

According to me, this short poem is a rant about her imaginary husband, Mr. Icarus. As the name suggests, he seems to be an over-ambitious pursuer of women. He proves this to Mrs. Icarus, and the world, by not stopping his chase, as Mrs. Icarus observes this from a hillock. The title is very fitting, as Icarus was the son of the Greek mythical figure, Daedalus. Who once made wings for him of wax, and warned him not to fly too close to the sun. Icarus ignored his father's warnings and flew too ambitiously towards the sun, which melted the wax, resulting in Icarus plummeting to his death.

In this day and age, it is very common for us to see relationships that either break down immediately, lack the trust and loyalty factors, or just lack satisfaction, leading to polygamy or promiscuity of the individual and over-ambition in pursuing partners Through the legend of Icarus, we know that over-ambition (of pursuing spouses) leads to downfalls. One such example could be of U.S. Congressman, Anthony Weiner. In 2011, Weiner was caught in a sexting scandal, where he sent explicit messages to multiple women whom he had met online. Initially, he lied about it, saying his account was hacked, but then confessed to his actions. Although his wife, Huma Abedin, stood by him and announced that they were trying to fix the marriage, his political career was essentially ruined. He faced extreme humiliation and was the subject of a movie called "Weiner", which was about his failed attempt to become mayor of NYC in 2013. He was again caught in another scandal in 2016, where he was caught sending explicit messages to a 15-year-old girl. He pleaded guilty to his actions and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He was required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and Huma Abedin filed for divorce the following year. This example can be related to the imaginary husband, Mr. Icarus, who is in a never-ending hot pursuit of women, who, like Mrs. Icarus, end up on the hill, watching him prove to the world that he is a Grade A pillock. I think that the reason why she indirectly refers to her husband as "Mr. Icarus" is because of the utter downfall she knows he is sure to face as Weiner did. There are multiple other Mr. Icarus or Anthony Weiner in this world who pursue partners or cheat on their romantic partners, who have or will surely face an irreversible downfall equivalent to Icarus' fall to his death.

The Look, although an innocent romantic confession to her lover, exhibits a common Global Issue of stereotyping and superficial viewing. We see that the poet is making very stereotypical connections and completely ignoring the value each object actually possesses. The intent of the poem is completely different but practices an extremely common but grave error.

It is practically impossible for a living thing to do away with stereotypes completely. Every human, animal, or insect reacts a certain way to certain things that look a certain way, based on their experience, as shown in Pavalov's experiment regarding reflexes. Even though humans are considered to be the most advanced creatures, their stereotyping can be much more baseless and, at times, much more cruel, such as racism, sexism, and so on. It is vital for the growth of humanity to minimize superficial viewing and stereotyping of each individual. Taking things for their face value often leads to disasters, misunderstandings, and undermining of those things. It is very evident that the poet is stereotyping certain things that offer much more than their face value, for example, the poet undermines the usefulness of the moon by saying it is simply the look of night, whereas it actually plays an important role in weather control and seasons. A very iconic example of undermining the value of something in real life is the story of Laszlo Hanyecz, which occurred on 22 May 2010. Hanyecz possessed 10,000 BTC, which was worth 40$ at the time. He traded the 10,000 BTC for two pizzas to be delivered to his house, as he wanted to test cryptocurrency and was too lazy to order it himself. This undermining of BTC cost him 600,000,000$, because a few years later, BTC grew rapidly and that amount would be worth 600,000,000$. This makes the pizzas the most expensive pizzas ever. This is an iconic example of undermining something and taking it at face value, as he had not studied BTC thoroughly enough to not make such an absurd transaction. Undermining things at such a small scale could also potentially cost a lot. In this case, Hanyecz undermined the potential value of BTC, and did not understand what transaction he was getting into. Similarly, the poet views the things that she mentions in a superficial and stereotypical manner, ignoring their actual importance to the people and the world. Hence, to interpret and comprehend the value of something or someone, one must strive to do away with superficial viewing and face-value interpretation for good or at least as much as possible.

The poem ‘Originally’ targets the global issue of migration and instability. The expatriation of children from their homeland has become increasingly common as their parents emigrate for employment. This can lead to growing children feeling the pressures of assimilation, causing them to lose the essence of their childhood. The phrase “I want our own country” portrays the homesickness that one initially endures as they are stripped away from their place of comfort. Eventually, though, their minds shun the thoughts of home in the hope of adapting. The lines “Now, Where do you come from? strangers ask. Originally? And I hesitate.”, establish the dissolution from home. The poem represents the mental instability of the child as she is separated from her birthplace without much say in the matter. This induces a loss of culture and loneliness in numerous children worldwide. Consequently, ‘Originally’ highlights the global issue of migration and instability.

A real-life example of this is when Russia intensified its attacks on Ukraine, leading to the mandated evacuation of all inhabitants from 37 communities in the region's northeast. The Kupiansk district of the Kharkiv region's administration claimed they were forced to take action due to "constant Russian shelling" in the region.

Source - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66466050#

The poem ‘Mrs Faust’ relates to the global issue of hedonism. The belief that seeking pleasure is the foremost aim in life is one that often persists in households worldwide. This, however, has serious implications in the world. The sole pursuit of pleasure can hinder one’s interest in personal and societal progression. This is illustrated in Duffy’s poem through the line, “I grew to love lifestyle, not the life”. Mrs Faust and her husband both turn apathetic toward each other as they get overly accustomed to their materiality. This tarnishes their relationship, parallel to many others in the current world. The phrase, “I’ve sold my soul”, highlights the extremity of the consequences of hedonism, and the loss of self-identity that it leads to. The poem represents the danger of excessive wants that people possess and the negative impact it has on social, economic, and private situations. ‘Mrs Faust’ portrays this global issue through a long-term marital relationship.

A real-life example of hedonism is the excessive consumption of cigarettes and tobacco-based products. Despite the obvious health hazards, smoking is a common source of instant pleasure and gratification. This has grave consequences: Tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year, including 1.3 million non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke.

Source - https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/tobacco

Little Red Cap - Riddhi

The poem ‘Little Red Cap’ portrays the global issue of predation. Exhibiting predatory behaviour towards individuals who are considered naive or powerless is an increasingly prevalent concern in current times. Throughout the poem, Duffy describes the wolf as a symbol of a predator. “The wolf, I knew, would lead me deep into the woods”, demonstrates how a predator often lures their prey into an unknown, faraway setting before striking. This is similar to how a kidnapper would attract children using candy. In the poem, the girl is intrigued by the wolf who has an intense masculine influence; “Red wine staining his bearded jaw. What big ears He had! What big eyes he had! What teeth!”. This emphasizes how victims of predation commonly walk into traps, unknowing of what will follow. Although Duffy’s poem ends on a peculiar note with the girl ending the wolf’s life (transitioning into the theme of feminism), many of the events preceding it highlight the act of predation, a worldwide issue.

A real-life example of predation is a case about a 19-year-old girl in Chandigarh who was gang-raped by two 30-year-old men in a forest. It was later claimed that the victim’s brother sexually abused the accused’s sister. The succeeding event can be seen as an act of revenge. This can be considered an act of predation due to the consent-violating behaviour and aggressiveness.

Source - https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/19-yr-old-gang-raped-in-forest-2-booked/articleshow/97833872.cms?from=mdr

Greed is a very big factor affecting people globally not only because it makes people irrational in making decisions but also because it blinds people to what they already are in possession of. Greed leads to neglect of efforts, love and appreciation. It is evident that the poem talks about greed being a contributing factor of one's failure.
It is unreasonable to assume that every human should live without greed. Greed plays an immense role in aspects of improvement and success. Only when greed breaks through a certain reasonable range does it become harmfully dangerous. The given poem "Mrs. Midas" suggests that excess greed of the husband has got him the boon ( or we could say curse) of turning anything he touches to gold. This not only disabled him from basic living necessities such as eating , drinking etc. but also deprives him of love from his wife. Deprives him of her touch and affection. The line "What gets me now is not the idiocy or greed but lack of thought for me. Pure selfishness. " clearly conveys that not only does the "greedy" suffer but also causes suffering to the people close to the "greedy". His wife suffers the loss of his touch and love simply because of his greed. She feels neglected just because of his selfishness.
Another example of a situation that exhibits the negative impact i.e. failure due to greed is the story of pirate Hendrick Lucifer , who fought for hours to conquer cuban gold, and ended up mortally wounded in the process. Greed can not only lead to mental harm but physical harm as well. Elaborating on the same using a second example, Alexander the great is known for his greed to capture and empower the "world", the resulted in a huge number deaths of his people and eventually led to his own. An example on how greed has a negative impact on economy and employment "Wall Street investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed into bankruptcy, triggering the worst financial crisis since 1929 that too many Americans are still recovering from today. " this news article suggests that the company's greed led to bankruptcy causing loss of jobs for employees. in 2001 two CEO partners of a company invested in risky organizations in hopes of getting more money . This led to their bankruptcy causing loss of jobs due to their greed.
Thus through these above examples and quoted lines from the poem , it can be deduced that greed most definitely leads to failure when it exceeds a limit. Most importantly it does not affect only the greedy, but also the people around the greedy.

Pedophelia and sexually objectifying women is a very well known global issue . The poem talks about this particular issue in many interesting way. Firstly, the poem is inspired by a "children's" story "Little Red Riding Hood" hinting at loss of a child's innocence and the very issue of pedophelia. Secondly, the content of the poem shows sexualising of a female child by a "big bad wolf " who is way older than her. Lines supporting the above statement "Sweet sixteen, never been, babe, waif, and bought me a drink My first "Sweet sixteen suggests she was young , her first drink suggest a new experience."What little girl doesn’t dearly love a wolf? " This line hints at the fact that the girls has to accept that it was her fault , the statement seem to be mocking with general assumption that every girl would love the predator. "The glistening, virgin white of my grandmother’s bones " this line suggests that wolf had taken away her grandmother from her by eating her. He had taken something of hers that was important and valuable to her. Implying that even the pedophiles take something precious from their prey. The most terrifying case that revolves around this issue is "A 38-year-old man has confessed to sexually assaulting as many as 500 kids, mostly girls, in northern India", the attacker also attempted abuse against 2500 children in New Delhi while working as a tailor. In this case the children he attempted assault against are the Red Riding Hood and the man can be considered to be the wolf. These articles prove that there is immense danger for young children of any gender.

Originally PEEL Paragraph: In the poem "Originally" by Carol Ann Duffy, the global issue of cultural differences in new places leading to imposter syndrome is poignantly explored. This issue is depicted through the eyes of a speaker who has moved to a foreign land, and the poem's structure and language effectively peel back the layers of this emotional struggle, shedding light on the sense of displacement and imposter syndrome. This can be seen in the lines. ‘Your accent wrong. Corners, which seem familiar, leading to unimagined pebble-dashed estates, big boys eating worms and shouting words you don’t understand. My parents’ anxiety stirred like a loose tooth in my head. I want our own country, I said.’. A great example for this would be the North Korean defactors who on seeing the outside world usually have a massive culture shock. Eventually it is seen how the children are seen changing and losing the culture and upbringing of their original homeland as seen in the lines, ‘But then you forget, or don’t recall, or change, and, seeing your brother swallow a slug, feel only a skelf of shame’ and also in the lines ‘I lost a river, culture, speech, sense of first space and the right place’.

This poem can also be viewed with the viewpoint of somebody who has recently lost a loved one. It shows how the kids can’t cope with the loss and even the adults are suffering as seen in the lines ‘My parents’ anxiety stirred like a loose tooth’. Thus this single poem is multi-faceted and shows how humans react to a loss and the how time is the greatest healer of wounds.

Thus in light of this evidence it can reasonably be concluded that Imposter Syndrome can be the Global Issue conveyed by this poem.

This poem particulary explores the theme of identity and the sense of displacement that one feels when they are forced to leave the place that they call homeand adapt to unfamilliar territory. The way they are forced to leave their habitats and flee and the mental problems that they face due to this can be seen clearly in the poem by the utilization of phrases such as 'where we didn’t live any more','My parents’ anxiety stirred like a loose tooth in my head' and 'My brothers cried, one of them bawling, Home, Home'. The mental state of the individual is seen to be lonely, nostalgic and melancholic here, as he/she is remebering the past and reminiscing memories of his/her home and how it made them feel safe and sound. It depicts feelings of alienation and confusion due to being pulled out of familiar surroundings and forced to adapt in a entirely new atmosphere. A great example to clearly show this can be seen in the refugees that are forced to leave behind their whole lives, their culture, their homes due to conflict or economic crisis, such as in the Russia-Ukraine war, which has affected millions of people in a similar fashion. The use of "hometown" and "other country" highlights the physical and emotional distance between the old and new homes.

In a broader and an indirect sense, another global issue that this can be connected to is deforestation, by replacing the central object of the poem to animals and birds in place of humans. In today's pollution-filled world, the number of trees are decreasing and hence there is a downfall of the places which animals can call home. The nostalgia and longing for one's home seen prominently in the poem matches the sense of loss associated with deforestation. While the direct link between "Originally" and deforestation is not that evident, upon going deeper, they can be connected through the broader theme of change, displacement, and adaptation. Hence, this poem depicts how migration and displacement have a huge impact on a person, or even an animal, as one requires a ground to stand on and call it his own. These effects on the migrants can be reduced by being more inclusive, fostering brotherhood and being understanding and caring. In an environmental point of view, the solution includes being mindful of your actions towards nature and its impacts and helping to co-exist peacefully with and within our surroundings.

PEEL Paragraph for War Photographer by Yash

War Photographer PEEL Paragraph: The poem War Photographer talks about the Global Issue that is ‘War leading to mass suffering’. This is the physical as well as mental agony that is associated with a war. The poem talks about the photographer’s struggle to reconcile to the horrors that he witnessed complacency of the world he returns to. The poem peels back the layers of detachment and desensitization, urging the reader to confront the uncomfortable reality that the suffering caused by war is an ongoing global crisis that demands our attention and empathy. Duffy's poem serves as a poignant reminder that the suffering of others should never be reduced to mere images but should prompt us to take meaningful action to reduce the global anguish caused by war. This can be seen in the lines ‘From the aeroplane he stares impassively at where he earns his living and they do not care.’ A good example to the converse for this could be the Russia-Ukraine war wherein the citizens of Ukraine are actually stepping into the frontlines and trying to prevent Russia from subjugating their homeland instead of just sitting at home and taking pity over the soldiers. Thus War Photographer conveys the Global Issue of suffering caused due to War.

One of the best examples that demonstrates the ill-effects of war can be the Hindu-Muslim riots in the state of Gujrat wherein everybody involved was from the same country, still tens of thousands of Hindus were displaced and multiple Muslim women were sexually assaulted.

This poem explores the themes of psychology, human values and education. The global issue that it potrays t here is dealing with mental state of a human mind.It mainly provides
hope too the human mind that fear may seem llike a wall in front at first thought but its just an obstacle

"If you think of the dark
as a black park
and the moon as a bounced ball,"

Initially in the first lines of ‘The Dark,’ the speaker tells the reader that there is nothing for “you” to be afraid of if “you” reassess and transform the way “you” consider the dark and the moon. She suggests that one should look at these two features as a “black park” and a “bounced ball”. The poet converts the imagined fearful matter into uncomplicated minimal things in life.
These images transform a disturbed human mind to a much more placid and serene mind. These images that are thought of to be the huge barriers are said to be nothing but a child's play and they connote the feelings of joy, pleasure and contentment in one's mind

But, ‘The Dark‘ concludes with a thought provoking line.
"Except for aliens...".The poet says that fear nothing but the aliens. Its saying that On a larger scale, the aliens represent the unknown; which humanity can not predict. They are the mystery element that might be introduced into one’s life that changes everything. It is not exactly aliens Duffy is introducing into The Dark, but that which humanity, or one single human being, did not account for. This provides a reality check to the readers.

Fear of llife can be seen from peoople having general anxiety to thanatophobia, philophobia, aerophobia etc.
This poem gives hope to individuals who fear life by not only calming their mind but providing a constructive way to deal with fear.

"Valentine" is a contemporary poem by Carol Ann Duffy that presents a unique and unconventional perspective on love through the metaphor of an onion. The poem talks about the global issue:Realism of love.It subverts traditional romantic notions and delves into the complex, multifaceted nature of love and relationships.

"Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper. "

Valentine’ uses an everyday ordinary object, the onion, to represent a love that is not mushy or cute but rather real faithful and genuine.
This poem elaborates that if someone loves fiercely they hold you fiercely accountable, it says that in the reality of love respect is not placating you or enabling your bad behavior or the ways in which one plays small. Loving fiercely means they love and see you with all that they have and are and hold you in high regard knowing you are better than how you cut corners and make excuses.
"I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithful
as we are,for as long as we are. "
Here the poem also talks about the durability of real and genuine love compared to short term romances.
Anyone who respects you and loves you from the true heart won’t let you cheat yourself or others. To be loved fiercely is to be baptized by fire and burned with desire. It may not feel so great when you’re confronted with the truth of love but it’s either that or death.

Love has a different definition in most people's life.In the generation that we live in the definition of love has changed.Valuing real love is the only way to find it.

The poem "War Photographer" by Carol Ann Duffy explores the physical and emotional scars that war leaves on individuals and societies. The poem suggests that the scars of war are not just physical, but also emotional and psychological. The poet is haunted by the images he has seen, and he struggles to cope with the trauma of his experiences. The poem also shows how the scars of war can be passed down from generation to generation, as the poet’s children are also affected by his trauma. The war in Ukraine is an ideal example for this as the war has caused widespread death, destruction, and displacement. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes, and many more have been injured or killed. The war has also had a devastating impact on the economy and infrastructure of Ukraine. The scars of the war in Ukraine are already evident. Millions of people have been traumatised by their experiences, and many will carry the physical and emotional scars of war for the rest of their lives. The war has also left a lasting legacy of destruction, both in terms of the physical infrastructure of Ukraine and the social fabric of the country. Thus, this poem is a powerful reminder of the cost of war. It shows how war can destroy lives and leave lasting scars on individuals, societies, and the world. The poem is a call to action to prevent war and to heal the scars that it leaves behind.

In Carol Ann Duffy's "Little Red Cap," the name change from "Little Red Riding Hood" to "Little Red Cap" represents a movement from subservience to assertiveness. In the story “The red riding hood” she covers her head with a garment which portrays modesty and shyness whereas a cap is a small and more stylish option which can flatter women. This reflects the widespread problem of gender inequality. The protagonist's journey from naivety to empowerment mirrors the struggle of women in society, which is reflected in the larger fight for gender equality. The perils that women endure are embodied in the meeting with the wolf. We get this by the line "The wolf, I knew, would lead me deep into the woods". Through this journey, the poem incorporates a personal metamorphosis into the universal story of women defying expectations and claiming agency, resonating with the movement for equality around the world.

"Mrs. Aesop" expertly delivers a provocative take on the traditional gender roles and cultural expectations that have historically restricted women. The use of vivid imagery, symbolism, and a narrative structure highlights topics such as power dynamics, oppression, and the possibility of revolutionary change. The poem's title, immediately establishes an immediate link to Aesop's fables, which are famous for their moral teachings, skillfully setting the stage for an analysis of gender roles as a moral lesson, thereby questioning established conventions. This tale is the wife's reaction to her husband's narratives, as well as her eventual revolt against the submissive role that has been pushed upon her. Lines like "He was small, didn't care." So he tried to impress" reveals the husband's efforts to compensate for his perceived shortcomings, showing a power dynamic in which he seeks authority over his wife through his stories. The expression, "tell no tales" fosters the idea that women should be weak and silent, repeating past tendencies to ignore or suppress women's voices and opinions.

The imagery incorporated into "the bird in his hand shat on his sleeve, never mind the two worth less in the bush" is a strong metaphor for the undervaluation of women's potential and roles. The husband's focus on immediate but insignificant advantages (the bird in hand) while ignoring bigger potential (the two birds in the bush) reflects the common tendency of women to prioritize immediate, surface-level expectations above substantive contributions and ambitions. In conclusion, "Mrs. Aesop" skillfully uses narrative and imagery to critically critique traditional gender roles, the suppression of women's voices, and the undervaluing of their potential. The poem pushes readers to scrutinize and confront societal traditions through the wife's compelling transformation and rebellion, presenting a case for equality and the empowerment of all.

"Mrs Icarus Lyrics" is a poem written by Carol Ann Duffy that explores the consequences of human pride. The poem highlights the consequences of human pride by depicting Mrs Icarus' transformation from a regular woman to someone with extraordinary experiences. The poem begins by introducing the speaker as someone who is not the first or the last to witness the consequences of human pride. Mrs Icarus' husband, like the mythological Icarus, is filled with pride and attempts to fly too close to the sun. This prideful act leads to his downfall, turning him into a fool in the eyes of the world. Mrs Icarus reflects on her own naivety and society's obsession with pride. She realizes that her husband's prideful act has rendered her insignificant and outdated. We get to know this by the line “he’s a total ,utter, absolute, grade A pillock. The poem criticizes the tendency of society to celebrate and then discard those who fall victim to their own pride.

The poem "Mrs. Sisyphus" digs at a universal problem of feeling stuck and bored at work. The character, like Sisyphus in the Sisyphus myth, is tired of doing the same thing over and over. This link deepens her strain of constantly working but never feeling fulfilled. The character's frustration is tangible, and we can identify with her. The situation she faces is compared to historical individuals in the poem. This demonstrates that the sensation of being confined has existed for a long time.

The poem brilliantly employs humor to criticize how society forces us to perform meaningless duties. It compares what is expected of us with what makes us actually happy. The character's discontent and even thoughts of hitting back reveal how much these insignificant duties may affect us emotionally. The poem makes a mockery of tedious routines and societal pressures. It demonstrates how different it is to perform something significant. In a nutshell "Mrs. Sisyphus" examines the universal challenge of feeling as if our work is meaningless. It cleverly relates this to the myth of Sisyphus, making it timeless. The poem's wit and irony make us consider how society's expectations can be separated from our own happiness.

Subjugation of women is oppression & an active attempt made by patriarchal societies to dominate and try to keep women inferior to men. This global issue is prevalent in most parts of the world, although with varying degrees, it exists nonetheless. There's several ways women face subjugation daily, (sometimes even before they're born in cases with female foeticide) like how women might get payed less as compared to their male counterparts in a workplace or how they're expected to take their husbands' last name after marriage.
A major example of women's subjugation is the story of Malala Yousafzai, an exteremly well known education & women's rights activist and the youngest noble prize laureate. Malala was shot on the left side of her head when she was just 15 for speaking out about girls' right to education, by a Taliban terrorist. Although most patriarchal societies & communities are not as extereme as the Taliban, they hold similar core values towards women & their rights.
While, subjugation of women is not an apparent part of the poem, its quite relevant as it helps the reader understand Mrs. Sisyphus' feelings elaborately. Mrs. Sisyphus feels subjugated by being sidelined and dealing with Mr. Sisyphus' ignorance towards her needs in their relationship., her references to Noah & Johann sebastian bachs' wives solidify this idea. Little details like how the poem, while being about her, is still named after her husband's name, almost as if she is nothing if not about HIM & HIS struggles also add onto this.

This poem is one which is relatable for nearly every teenager since it depicts the transition from childhood into adolescence, the difficulties that come along with it and the major changes that are noticable between the two. The global issue here can be taken as the loss of innocence due to maturation and the inevitable process of growth along with its complexities. The poem uses contrast to depict the change between these two time periods.

Childhood is depicted as a merry and carefree time, which is seen by the utilization of phrases such as 'You could travel up the Blue Nile with your finger','Mrs Tilscher loved you.' and life then was all about 'Enthralling books','Sugar paper','Coloured shapes', and 'A xylophone’s nonsense'. Then came the vicissitude of time, now " the laugh of a bell' was replaced by 'A tangible alarm made you always untidy, hot', then 'A rough boy told you how you were born','air tasted of electricity' and 'the sky split open into a thunderstorm'. These all show the contrast in between the two stages of life and the difficulties faced when the transition occurs. Now the joyful and nurturing classroom environment that Mrs. Tilscher had created for you vanished into oblivion and adolescence takes its place.Life for you is very confusing and stressful and it is like youre caught in the eye of a storm, with no idea where you are and what to do. This transition is a universal experience that individuals around the world undergo, highlighting the global nature of the theme. The challenges that need to be overcome while growing up are inescapable for youth worldwide. The need to navigate societal expectations, education, and personal development is a global concern. The experiences and emotions portrayed in the poem resonate with people from various backgrounds and cultures, hence making it a piece that can be appreciated and understood on a global level.
A common example to easily understand this change can be seen when a child shifts from 10th grade, where there was always someone to keep him on his toes, to college, where no one cares about what he is doing and he is lost in the crowd of people. Hence the challenges of growing up is the global issue targeted in this poem.

Brutality of war is a tremendously discussed issue worldwide, and for a good reason. War is a state of hostile conflict between 2 or more communities or nations, it effects not only the soldiers on the battlefield but also commonfolk in the war afflicted areas (along with injury and disability, they experience sexual violence, malnutrition & trauma induced mental conditions). Wars also have detrimental enviornment & economical impacts.
World war 2 was the bloodiest conflict & is infact the largest war witnessed by human kind. Its main combatants were the Axis power (Germany, Italy & Japan) & the Allied powers (The Great britain, The United states of America & The Soviet union). The war brokeout when Germany invaded Poland which consequently led to The Great britain & France declaring war on Germany, thus commencing a war between the Axis powers & the Allied powers. The war caused an estimate total of 70-80 million deaths making it, as aforementioned, the deadliest military conflict in mankind. It also had other drastic impacts globally like a reduction in the population of flora & fauna and diversity of species along with extereme economic concerns with a rise in poverty, unemployment & inflation.
Brutality of war is grandly highlighted in the second world war as its unfeeling outcomes still continue to be talked about everywhere all across the world, the damages made by the hostile conflict between the Axis power & the Allied power shall be unforgotten. The Nürnberg Trials, The Holocaust, The Bataan death march & The Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings are of the recorded heartless tribulations that came out of it.
The global issue 'Brutality of war' truly shines through in this piece of Duffy's. The imagery used in the poem, of the photographer developing the photos in the red lit room all alone, getting nightmarish flashbacks of a soldiers' wife's cries as he asks for her consent for publication of her assumingly late husband's photographs he took during his time on the battlefield, as he antagonistically thinks into the future, visualizing his editor picking out a few pictures and the readers of the publication shedding a few tears before reverting back to their lives, most likely forgetting about the tragedies that took place overnight while he must suffer through sleepless nights & traumatic days, bearing the burden of so much pain to make a living.

The poem "Mrs. Icarus" by Carol Ann Duffy explores the global issue of gender inequality through the lens of the classic myth of Icarus. In the poem, Mrs. Icarus is married to a man who is constantly making a fool of himself in public. She is embarrassed by his behaviour, but she feels powerless to do anything about it. This reflects the reality of gender inequality in many parts of the world, where women are often expected to remain silent and accept the behaviour of their husbands. This is a form of gender-based violence that silences women and prevents them from exercising their basic human rights. The poem can be seen as a critique of the patriarchal structures that often silence and disempower women and is a powerful reminder of the need to fight for gender equality around the world. It is a call for women to speak out against gender inequality and to demand change.

In both the poem and the global issue, there's a theme of how the darkness of the night can lead to misconceptions and misjudgments. Just as the characters in the poem respond to the dangers they perceive during the night, in real life individuals respond to the issue of dangers at night through various measures these could include law enforcement, community engagement, curfews and setting more strict rules and regulations with greater consequences.

The poem ‘Mrs Midas’ portrays the global issue of income disparity through the use of various ideas such as the effect of sudden wealth and unequal distribution of resources. Firstly the poem emphasizes how the gain of sudden wealth can lead to isolation and estrangement. When King Midas gains the ability to turn everything to gold, a strain on his relationship with his wife develops. This highlights how drastic disparities in wealth can create social and emotional distress between loved ones and further elaborates on how a sudden gain in income can cause distances in social relations. This point can be further supported by the phrase, “What gets me now is not the idiocy or greed but lack of thought for me”, which emphasizes how there is weariness in their relationship. The poem helps to further signify the wide gap between rich and poor in real world society.

In the poem ‘In Mrs Tilscher’s Class', the poet talks about a hidden topic which is sex education which people don’t like to talk about openly. The poem portrays the kids growing up and learning new things that were around them. The teacher whom the poet talks about in the poem was very kind and she had a caring nature, but when the students started asking questions related to their bodies, the teacher did not really give clear answers. "You asked her how you were born and Mrs Tilscher smiled, then turned away", shows avoidance of the teacher towards the students. Just like in real life, people feel very uncomfortable while talking about these things. By reading the poem the reader can realize how important it is to teach their kids about their body and feelings so that they don’t feel shy. The poem shows that, in real life, people sometimes avoid talking about the things that are very important like sex education.

Carol Ann Duffy's poem "Valentine" tackles the universal problem of questioning traditional and commercialised ideas of love. Duffy proposes an alternative to conventional romantic presents like red flowers and satin hearts by using the metaphor of an onion as a sign of love. It is clear from lines like "Not a red rose or a satin heart. / I give you an onion" that the poet was trying to defy conventional expectations. She continues by comparing the onion to "a moon wrapped in brown paper," alluding to its latent beauty that stands in contrast to its outward look. This choice of symbolism reflects the broader global issue of unrealistic portrayals of love in media and consumer culture. The poem questions the impact of commercialised representations of affection, which often emphasise the shallow and immediate aspects of love. By likening love to an onion, Duffy emphasises its complexity and multi-layered nature. This challenges readers to reevaluate their understanding of love, acknowledging its intricacies beyond the conventional imagery. The poem's treatment of love is a statement on the necessity to redefine and value the complexity of human emotions in a world dominated by social media, media, and advertising. The widespread problem of exaggerated expectations fuelled by the media can result in misunderstandings and relationship disappointments. Duffy invites readers to understand that true love has many layers, including its intensity, anguish, and perseverance by using the metaphor of an onion. As people all across the world handle the intricacies of human interactions, this theme reverberates across cultural and geographic barriers. As a result, "Valentine" challenges us to reevaluate how we view love and presents a viewpoint with universal applicability in the context of modern society.

The poem "The Look" by Carol Ann Duffy explores the widespread problem of superficiality by showing how outward appearances frequently affect how we see and comprehend various facets of life. The poem offers a series of contrasts wherein how we perceive things is determined by their outward appearances. Words like "The heron's the look of the river" and "The rose is the look of the garden" show how visual clues influence our perception of these entities. The phrase "The [noun] is the look of..." is used several times, highlighting the importance of appearance in our judgements. The global issue of superficiality is illuminated as the poem underscores the tendency to judge and comprehend based on surface-level attributes. By associating each subject with its "look," the poem emphasises how our understanding of the world can be limited by what we see on the outside. This approach can lead to oversimplification, misinterpretation, and the overlooking of deeper truths and complexities. The problem of superficiality is a universal one in a world where image-centric media and cultural forces are pervasive. The poem serves as a warning about the dangers of making decisions purely on the basis of appearances. It encourages us to look past the surface and take into account the underlying substance, making us aware of the need for a more nuanced view of people and circumstances. Duffy encourages readers to confront their previous views by emphasising how looks can affect how we perceive things, developing a more sympathetic and considerate approach to the intricacies of life.
