In 1950s, many African Americans were segregated economically in northern cities like Pittsburgh and Chicago and as a result, only lower paying jobs such as trading and collecting garbage were reserved for black males. Troy has been fulfilling onerous family responsibilities, financially struggling to sustain his families. In this scene, Troy highlights his economic constraints which connects to the status of African Americans at that time.

This climax scene of the play is when
father-son relationship between Troy and Cory deteriorates as they release their hardships.
This connects to the theme of damaging impact of segregation in Fences because it shows how financial constraint experienced by African Americans not only on race relations between white and black but also on relationships within black community. The major culprits to the bitter argument between Cory and Troy are material limitations and football which was again caused by racial discrimination experienced by Troy.

Foreshadowing: Early in this scene, Cory and Troy have an interaction written in the blocking. “CORY wanders over to the tree, picks up the bat and assumes a batting stance. He studies an imaginary pitcher and swings. Dissatisfied with the result, he tries again. TROY enters. They eye each other for a beat. CORY puts the bat down and exits the yard.” This interaction foreshadows the larger and similar altercation that Troy has with Cory, in which Cory ends up leaving the home for good.

Literary Device: Symbolism

Symbolism: Troy was a symbol of the ignorance that was polarizing the country during that time. The white people did not know how to be tolerant and could not respect culture due to their ignorance so that drove a deep divide between races. Troy was the driving factor in the splitting of the family. Rose kept telling Troy that things are better but he can't see them so it wasn't until after he was gone and the ignorance was gone that the family got back together.
