There were six desks set up with two chairs each, and each had a propt taped to the desk. Students moved through the different prompts in different orders in order to have different ideas to talk about and different people to talk with. Although we could not figure out the math to have it work out so that everyone talked with a different person at each station, there was a variety of combinations which made talking about the book more interesting. In reading, we learned how many immigrant children must work full time in addition to going to school, or do not go to school and work instead. This violates many labor laws, and it is difficult for the governemnt to manage this or crack down on offending companies. We also learned that child labor is used at making MANY of the US-made items we buy sucy as Cheerios, Cheetos, granola bars, J. Crew clothing, and more.

Students did one in a group as a combined effort (1/2 the class did one quote, the other 1/2 did a different quote). Then students each did their own. •  Because the number of supermarkets has shrunk so dramatically, they basically have a monopoly over the supply chain and farmers have to meet their demand.

•  That grocery stores are the ones who control prices, and therefore what farmworkers get paid.

The goal is to monitor their focus (they rate their focus for the class from 1-4 and say why). The other reason is to get a sense of their takeaways and comprehension from class. This is also a way that they can let me know how they are experiencing the materials and anything else. It is a way that I can write to a student every day and if there's something I am noticing, can let them know.
