Political: The civil rights movement and black empowerment lead to African-American culture and style becoming more popularized. This included imported clothing and jewelry, and hairstyles such as the afro and cornrows.
Economic: In the 1960's, the poverty rate was high. Because of this, the clothes that people wore were not of a huge importance which explains the freeness of many styles during the time. Political: Because of how many wars had been fought, nationalism and patriotism were at an all time high. People were very conservative politically, and their clothing was conservative as well.
Economic: During the 1950's, the middle of the baby boom, the average family size was 5.8 people. Compared to the average of 2.6 people today, it is a huge number. Political: With Nixon's Watergate scandal, along with things like the Kent State Shooting, people had a distrust for the government. They wanted to establish their own identities, and wore outfits that were 'out there' to do so.
Economic: The 1970's was a rough time economically. There were huge amounts of inflation. Banks often raised their interest rates to 20%. This made people against figures of power even more. Economic: Although the early 1980's saw an economic recession, as time went on the US improved economically. Political: In the 2000's, women's fashion definitely took on a more feminine role while mens was also more masculine, implementing lots of sportswear into everyday casual wear which had been popularized since the 1980's. The 2000's saw men and women's styles become very distinct.
Economic: The Great Recession from 2007 to 2009 had a massive economic impact on the US economy and many people's financial situations. One of the biggest things however, was the social mania over Michael Jordan and his shoe brand in the '90's taking over.
Political: During the '90's, women became far more prominent on the political stage. In 1992, females all across America ran for congress. It was an empowering time for women, and so women started feeling more and more able to dress the way they wanted to, and not the way society felt fit.
Economic: The 1990's was an extremely strong time economically. There was great growth, low inflation, and an increasingly strong stock market. People started having money to buy fancier clothes and shoes. Jordan's became the first shoe that people would be willing to spend a lot of money on.
