Computer VS. Typewriter

Lynn, a 67 year old Bank Manager from Upstate NY states that growing up as a teenager, her first job was a secretary at a dentists’ office. The year was 1973, and the only way to professionally write up referrals and billing statements was to use a typewriter. She attended secretarial classes in school, which was the norm for girls her age. She didn’t get a computer until her 30’s (1998-ish), when she started working as a teller in a bank and she was expected to learn how to use one. She states that it was difficult to switch from a typewriter to a computer because the key spacing is different- but overall it’s easier to use a keyboard. Nowadays, she’s fluent in computer technology regarding her job, but otherwise she “just uses the computer for games and online shopping”. She also has a cell phone but doesn’t use it much for the internet feature, although she browses Facebook.

Varied Writing Programs

Kennedy Ruger, a 28 year old Sailor in the Navy and current college student, remarks on using different writing programs to create college papers and content. She states that she grew up using Microsoft Word as the standard for writing High School papers, but now that she’s been in college, she uses Google Docs more. And not only that, she doesn’t even own a computer, tablet, or Chromebook and instead completes all her assignments using her phone! Her family bought their first computer when she was just 2 years old (in 1997), and she remembers playing computer games on it at just 4 years old. She feels that having grown up with that technology, it has made it easy for her to adapt to any new technology coming out.

Covid Quitting

Pamala, a 75 year old retired teacher states that “Covid made me quit”. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, teachers were expected to make the leap to an Online learning strategy. Pamala was born in 1948, and when she had to complete school assignments, she would have to check books out of the library- often times waiting up to a week to receive a book from an out of town library to complete research papers for college. She states that she remembers a time when she was looking in the card catalog for a book she needed and she found a bunch of the cards were misplaced out of order and it was extremely frustrating. When teachers had to make a drastic change, she felt the pressure to keep up with the curriculum to be to difficult. She is a self-proclaimed “computer illiterate”. She rarely accesses the internet even for personal use, and oftentimes leaves her “smart phone” at home when she leaves the house. She blames her retirement on “being forced to use computer programs that she has no intention of learning”.
