I learned that in Tokugawa Japan once all the Europeans were drove out of the country, they were required to show some form of buddhism. Another thing I learned is that in 1639 Japan had a sealed borders and was a closed country so there was no getting in or out, and was closed to Europe for almost 200 years. One other thing I learned was Firearms were never in Japan until the Europeans came in and traded with them, they only used swords.

Portuguese brought many things to Japan because they wanted to trade, they had things that they had never seen and so they wanted them, but the only way to get them was to trade. Portuguese gave the Japanese firearms so they could move away from the traditional sword and get more advanced. They also brought tobacco which is something that the Japanese had never had or seen, and new nothing about but loved so they had to have it. And one other thing was clocks, the ability to tell time just by looking at something instead of having to guess what time it was by looking at the sun.

When the Portuguese got to Japan they wanted to use the '3 G's' in a sense they wanted gold (things the japanese had they had never seen), Glory (fame), and God. They wanted to spread Christianity around the world because they believe there religion was the only right one so you better convert. The Portuguese arrived in Japan and stated to trade and teach Christianity, but the Japanese did not like them coming into their land unwanted and trying to convert them. Eventually the Japanese got sick of it and drove them out of Japan by killing them and telling them to leave or they will be killed. So like any human they left, and Japan's borders were closed to them for over 200 years.

The Japanese were a very strict group of people and did not want other people in there country. They did a good job of keeping them out, Japan was isolated for 214 years before outsiders got into the country. Once Japan was done with isolation they started trade with the Portuguese. The city of Nagasaki was known for quite a few things but one weird thing it is known for is being the third largest shipbuilding city in the world.

Since Japan was an isolated country there was lots of things they had that other places did not, so the Portuguese kept pushing them and trading but Japan doesn't like that and sent them home. Japan traded with the Portuguese before forcefully making them leave. They gave them exported swords, silk, silver, and lacquer wear.
