All the toys are waiting for something, and spend their time waiting and watching. This is a very cute story and a great way to measure inferencing skills, comprehension, and would be a great writing prompt for students - What are You Waiting For?

Published 2010
Read: 4/1/17
Award: Caldecott Medal
Ages: 4-8 years

Review: Interrupting Chicken is a very cute and funny story that many children will love. Chicken's Dad is getting ready to read her a bed time story, but warns her to not interrupt the story. Throughout the book, he ends up reading her three different stories (Hansel and Gretal, Little Red Riding Hood, and Chicken Little) Every time her dad gets to a scary part or a part when something bad happens, Chicken interrupts and says something like, "Out jumps the little red chicken and she says, "Don't go in! She's a Witch! So Hansel and Gretel Didn't. The End!" She does this for every story and eventually has to tell her dad a story.
Teaching Points: Creating your own ending to stories

The illustrations are quite intriguing as only black, grey, and red are used. The story talks about a little piglet named Olivia and what she does on a daily basis, from changing her clothes multiple times, bossing her brother around, dancing, building exciting sand castles, etc. It is a very cute story that a lot of children will relate to.
Teaching Points: How are you and Olivia alike?
Compare and Contrast multiple Olivia Books

He carries his blanket, Fuzzy around everywhere he goes. Owen is now five years old, and is "too big" to carry his blanket with him everywhere, and isn't allowed to bring it with him. Owen and his parents have to figure out a way for him to "let go" of his treasured blanket. This is a very sweet story that is great for younger children, especially when they are first starting school.
Teaching Points: Writing Prompt - What is something you have/had trouble letting go of?
What is something that is very special to you, like Owen's blanket Fuzzy is to him?

CJ and his grandmother take the bus everywhere, and he begins to wonder why they don't have a car, or own fancy things like an iPod. With his grandmothers help, CJ is able to see the beauty in the life that they do have as well as find things to be grateful for.
This book is such an amazing and beautiful look into the not so typically portrayed lower economic status. Not only does this book reach children who are raised by their grandparents, but is an extremely positive and inspiring view of one woman's take on the world .

Teaching Ideas: Go on a nature walk and find things surrounding the area that have beauty, and write about them
Write about something beautiful and good in your life.
