In Olive Kitteridge, Elizabeth Strout represents Denise’s hands as innocence. Strout writes, “When she took off her mittens, her hands were as thin as a childs… assumed the various shapes of a graceful grown woman.” (pg 10-11). This represents innocence because Denise has had a very sheltered life. Her hands represent the fact that Denise never had any troubles, because they are described as childlike, and children are very innocent. In addition, Henry Kitteridge is having many problems at home with his wife. When he goes to work and sees Denise, her hands are very innocent to him because she had not yet had problems with her marriage and she is happy. The contrast between his home life and Denise’s life focuses on her hands because they are childlike, and therefore, innocent compared to Henry’s life.

In Olive Kitteridge, Elizabeth Strout represents a cliff as death. Kevin notices a girl walking along the edge of a cliff, “A nervousness touched his chest; it was sheer rock in front there, if he remembered right, a straight drop down.” (pg. 38). This represents death because the girl at any time could fall. The cliff was nothing but a source of stress for Kevin at the time because he was afraid she would fall, so the cliff represented death, because the girl was so close to it. Kevin was planning on killing himself. The cliff also represents death because when the girl fell off of it, Kevin could only think of how she wanted to live so badly. The cliff represented death in this way because if the girl had not fallen off of the cliff, then Kevin most likely would have killed himself.

In Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout, the piano that Angie plays represents regret. Strout writes, “But for years Angie had pictured a place; a white, sprawling place where young people played the piano all day… but no, Angie's mother had decided. She was a Mommy’s girl.” (pg 56). This shows regret in her life because she always excelled at the piano and had a dream to become even better t a school, but her mother’s decision had left her playing piano at a local bar. This shows her regret because she never was able to do the thing that she really loved at a higher level. The piano also represents regret because Angie has stage fright. Her coping mechanism for her stage fight was to drink alcohol before every performance to be able to play well. This is regret in her life because the one thing that she loves doing, she cannot not share with other people while being fully aware. The piano reminds her of all of the things that could have been, if not for her mother and her stage fright.

Elizabeth Strout, in Olive Kitteridge, represents secrets as a muffin. Nina says, “One time I cut my muffin in half. The rules are, you’re not supposed to engage... with the food except to eat it.” (pg 93). The muffin represents a secret because Nina did not want the doctors to know that she had been cutting up her food. It represents the fact that Nina was secretly not getting better in the hospital even thought the doctors thought she was. Another way that a muffin represents secrets is how Daisy and Harmon toasted to muffin cutting. This represents a secret because it is a secret bond that Daisy and Harmon have over Nina. This is also a secret because Harmon’s wife does not know that he goes to Daisy’s house. The muffin is the secret of their shared love of Nina and their affair, which both cannot be known by Harmon's wife.

In Olive Kitteridge, Elizabeth Strout uses a ski mask to represent defeat. The boy holding Olive and her husband hostage takes off the mask when he gets too hot and stressed. This represents defeat because the boy has given up on giving away his identity. He is defeated because his mask no longer protects himself from the authorities. The mask also represents defeat because when Olive is with the boy with the ski mask the thinks, “She knew she was going to die--that they would, all of them, be shot execution size.” (114). This shows her defeat because she not longer has any expectancy to live. The ski mask represents her giving up on life because she knows that the boy with the ski mask is going to kill her.

In Olive Kitteridge, Elizabeth Strout represents joy with lights strung on peoples houses. Jane thought, “She loved seeing all these lights...and she was happy right now” (pg 126). This quote shows that the lights represent joy because the lights are shining brightly all along the street and Jane loves them and her husband loves her. The lights are brightly lit, which represents the happiness that Jane is feeling. At the end of the chapter, Jane finds out that her husband cheated on her and she is very upset. The Christmas lights are said to have extinguished. This represents Jane's sadness because of the contrast between before, when she was happy and the lights were on, and after, when she was sad and the lights were off. The lights are bright and cheery, and when they are off, they represent the sadness of her husband cheating on her.

In Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout, the basket of pamphlets of places to go represents the loss of hope. Marline says, “In the closet you’ll find pamphlets, you know, of different places to go?...Just take the with you, and throw them all away.” (pg 179). Marline’s husband died, and now she has no one to share the pamphlets with. This shows a loss of hope because Marline had hope that her husband would live, which was why she had the pamphlets. Now that her husband is dead, she has nothing to do with the pamphlets, so she just wants them gone because all of her hope of traveling somewhere with her husband is gone. The pamphlets also represent a loss of hope because Olive understands. Similarly, Olive has a pair if Henry’s shoes that she cannot bear to move. This is a loss of hope because they both cannot move their husbands things because there is no hope for either of their husbands to get better anymore.

In Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout, loneliness is represented by the radio that Olive sleeps with. Olive is described in her bed, “She lay on her side, clutching her transistor radio” (pg 149). This shows her loneliness because ever since her husband had a stroke she needs to listen to voices when she goes to sleep. This represents loneliness because she does not have real company so she must listen to the voices on the radio. In addition, the radio represents loneliness because the voices talk about lots of events and Olive does not have anybody to go to events with or to talk to about events. This shows that the radio represents loneliness because Olive has to listen to the radio because she has no husband to listen to anymore.

“In Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout, the limousine coming to pick up Julie represents her feeling out of place in her life. Mentioning the limousine, Strout writes, “he said they should have mentioned the dirt road, that the branches would scratch the paint.” (pg 187). This represents Julie feeling out of place in her life because she also cannot seem to fit into her life, similar to the limousine's inability to fit through their driveway. In addition, Bruce feels out of place because he does not want to get married to Julie. The limousine represents Bruce’s feelings of being out of place because he does not fit into Julie’s life well, like the limousine does not fit into the driveway

In Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout, the butterscotch on Olive’s shirt represents distance between her and her son, Christopher. Strout writes about the butterscotch on Olive’s shirt, “her son should have pointed this out the minute it happened.”(pg 226). This shows the distance between her and her son because her son would not longer point out an embarrassing and fixable flaw, while they used to be so close. This also represents distance because the stain on her shirt reminds her of her aunt that used to spill food on her shirt. This represents distance because Olive is so distant from her younger self that she used to be, and the stain on her shirt shows that because she is like her aunt, and her aunt used to be so old to her.
