The task was that in groups, we had to record a video as if we were going to upload it to the ‘YouTube’ platform talking about some cultural topic from an English-speaking country. I think it can be a great collaborative activity. I participated in it, and besides showing more interest and researching on our own, we were able to put points in common with our teammates.

Nowadays, gossip is really trendy so I think that it would be a great idea to create debate teams and provide them interesting or spicy themes to talk about. This encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and fluency in expressing opinions.

They could create a project about a topic they end up presenting in different ways, as a podcast, recording a video, creating a web... They could also create a debate about a juicy or interesting topic for them in order to encourage them to develop their speaking skills as well as critical thinking and respect.

Students can work in a collaborative environment in different ways. For example, they can create a project about one of the seventeen SDGs to present to a class and evaluate their peer projects. They also can do role-playing activities like making a video about a real-life situation, outside activities in groups like cleaning a park and learning vocabulary about climate change while they do a good action for a community.

One collaborative language task could involve students working together to create a podcast on current social issues. They would research a topic, plan different episodes, and take on different roles such as hosts, researchers, or scriptwriters. This activity would help them practice critical thinking, improve their speaking and writing skills, and encourage them to discuss relevant topics in the target language. Additionally, they could use a platform like Padlet to share their recordings and receive feedback, promoting language development and teamwork.

A collaborative language learning task I love is Scavenger Hunt. It is a fun way of learning new vocabulary (the game can be themed depending on the time of the year, i.e.: Halloween, Christmas, Easter Holidays, etc.) and also a very productive way to teach them how to work in teams.

I could ask them to write a script and enact a scene that they could perform and record on video, edit and upload to a platform for the other classmates to see. This is a task that fosters collaboration, since they have to design their characters and write their lines in conversation with one another or else the interactions won’t make sense. It also promotes creativity and makes them speak in the target language.

I once tried having my 1st grade students at the academy do a kind of drama and a script, to improve vocabulary comprehension and fluency in speaking. It worked well, so I have been able to incorporate it into my range of “fun” or “relaxing” activities at the end of class.
