Too much emphasis put on the tests themselves. Students feel overwhelmed. There is only one way for the test, we spend all quarter long teaching different ways, working in small groups, etc. then the test comes around and it's done only this one way.

Formative assessment INFORMS instruction, it represents student learning and progress toward mastery of a learning target. Students should not be graded/judged on the learning process and practicing skills for mastery. If formative assessment is done frequently and effectively, you always know where students "are" in relation to mastery. The summative should come when students are ready!

We are okay with the split. Sometimes students don't do the classwork when they know it isn't worth as much as the assessments. But that being said the students not doing the classwork are probably not scoring well on the assessments .

Students with special needs are provided a variety of differentiated instructional techniques but are required to take the same test. When it is scored 70/30, it really hurts their grades.

Coming from a past district that did a 90/10 split, I don't have any issues. Doing it well is about making sure the 90% is assessing anything that a student has to demonstrate what they know--and you have to do that authentically. If it is a key standard that you would be willing to "fail" a student or "reteach" a student for not knowing it is in the 90%. The 10 is only for practice or minor things that aren't related to that, and those should never be a major part of a student's grade.

The issues we have with 70/30 is the validity of the assessments. Are they bias? Do they take into account socioeconomic backgrounds when dealing with vocabulary when reading the assessments or understanding the questions? As the tests are written now no we don't agree with 70/30 split.
