What is the state's approach to meeting the needs of all students?

The state believes in using multiple resources in every classroom to reach every student. These resources look different in each school but can include proper, up-to-date technology, paraprofessionals, tutoring/homework help services, etc. The state also upholds that Special Education services must be provided in every school K-12.

What programs are available to support diverse learners?

At Lewiston High School there are multiple programs to support learners. In terms of academic help, there is multi-subject tutoring provided in the library after school multiple times a week. This also takes place on the weekends, and it is called Saturday School. For special ed students, there are paraprofessionals or student aids that accompany their students from class to class and can help them one on one. There is also a main special ed classroom complete with a kitchen, work space, and resting area. In terms of personal services, there is a free food bank in the school, free lunch can be provided to those who qualify, and there are always counseling services available.

How does the school/district appear to meet the needs of diverse learners?

A big category of diverse learners in Lewiston are people living in poverty. Many of the students attending Lewiston High School receive free lunch and breakfast. Many teachers also provide snacks in their classrooms that everyone is welcome to as food security is an issue even with the school lunch program. There are also a few quiet rooms throughout the school that students may work in if needed. These are small rooms that just have a desk and a bean bag chair, but they provide a quiet space for students who may feel overwhelmed or overstimulated.

From your perspective and based on your review of the school/district, what appear to be the strengths of the school/district? What appear to be the areas in need of improvement?

I think what truly makes the school so amazing is the teachers. Every teacher there cares about their students and wants them to succeed. While I was in high school, it felt like my teachers genuinely wanted to get to know me and I formed lasting relationships with many of them. One area in need of improvement is the special education program at school. Due to underfunding, there is only one special ed room at the school, but there are over 20 special ed students. These students need a bigger space and more resources, but again it is more of a funding issue.
