1. Choose a line(s) from either page 6, 35, or 49 that contains a poetic device (imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, onomatopoeia) that stands out to you for any reason. Record /type the line(s) in AWE.

2. Then, underneath the line(s) in AWE, evaluate the line(s) you have chosen. What does this line(s) add to the poem/scene AND to the story overall?

1) Imagery - "...and one day when I'm able, my grandfather says, I'm gonna figure out how to grow myself a pecan tree" (Woodson 49).

2) This line shows that one day when one is old enough, they will learn how to create something of their own, something that they could use to help them in their life. If Jacqueline were old enough to figure it out she could create something beautiful. It affects the poem because its showing that one day you won't have to rely on another to help you because you will have all of the necessary skills to help yourself.
This line will affect the whole book because it could be giving away a clue about what is in store for Jacqueline. SHe could have to face something where she is on her own, and because of her family she would be able to help herself and get past the obstacle in her life. It also shows how the story could possibly have her end up teaching someone else about the skills she needed for an occasion.

#1: Metaphor : "Malcolm's-raised and fisted or Martin's-open and asking or James's-curled around a pen. I do not know if these hands will be like Rosa's or Ruby's gently loved or gloved and fiercely folded calmly in a lap, on a desk, ready to change the world ..." (Woodson 6)
#2: This line compares Woodson to Rosa, Ruby, Malcolm, Martin, ect. She believes that your hands shapes what you do with the world so which path will she take.

Imagery"For now my parents stand hugging in the warm Carolina rain. No past. No future. Just this perfect Now" (Woodson 35).

This line adds the passion and love her parents have for each other to the story. It describes how everything in that moment is perfect. I think that overall itt affects the story by adding that feel that even the simplest things and moments can mean more than anything, especially in a time like that. It proves that you can be happy even when things don't really go right. There are still things to cherish.
