This exhibitions purpose is to explore the intricate and well crafted containers that were gifted to royal loved ones or those newly deceased. Particularly this exhibit will be focusing on the usage of the these containers as perfume/cosmetic carriers as well as the materials that these canisters are made of.
The Pyxis of al-Mughira was a very intricate box that held make up. It was mostly known for carrying perfumes or heavy scents that would linger if the box was left open. The pyxis was often gifted as a coming of age gift. The pyxis were crafted from ivory which was a desirable material as if had been only introduced after the reign of Abd al-Rahman III(1). The Terracotta Alabastron was used as a perfume container during the classical Greek period. These pieces were often made from glass and gifted to those deceased(2). The amphora shaped perfume bottle was another Greek vase that held oils. This container was also made from glass. These vases were also ceremonial vases but could have been used to hold the deceased remains rather than just oils alone(3).

Sources:
1. https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/ap-art-history/early-europe-and-colonial-americas/ap-art-islamic-world-medieval/a/pyxis-of-al-mughira

2. https://www.colorado.edu/classics/2018/05/10/200633t-alabastron#:~:text=An%20alabastron%20is%20antiquity's%20version,for%20decorative%20or%20funerary%20purposes.

3. https://www.getty.edu/education/teachers/classroom_resources/curricula/mythology/downloads/worksheet01_02.pdfhttps://www.getty.edu/education/teachers/classroom_resources/curricula/mythology/downloads/worksheet01_02.pdfhttps://www.getty.edu/education/teachers/classroom_resources/curricula/mythology/downloads/worksheet01_02.pdf
