Due to the fact that indigenous women and girls are then highest target for trafficking, our project solely focuses on them. Despite traffickers not intentionally target one particular group, indigenous girls are more vulnerable to trafficking due to being from places of with high poverty. (Voice, 2020)
 
 For example TAMANG- North central hilly region of Nepal, was known for having victims of internal trafficking. This shared many common elements with internal displacement. The guiding principle on internal displacements convey IDP’s as persons or group of persons who have been forced to leave or flee their homes or places of habitual residence. These reasons of flight vary from armed conflict, violation of human rights, and natural or human-made calamities

Why are they more vulnerable?

Victims of trafficking also resemble IDP’s demographically. Whilst there are no stereotypes, most victims are believed to be under 25 years of age. With many in their mid to late teens. (Martin, 2020)

Published reports confirm that ethnic conflict and ethnic fragmentation exacerbate the internal displacement of individuals from networks of family and community as well as their access to economic and social safety nets. These individuals then become victims as they hope for better economic prospects elsewhere. 

A study by Richardson et al. (2016) focuses on 46 Nepali women who left trafficking situations and returned home. The key finding of this study highlight the effects of stigma, skills training, access to livelihood, marriage prospects and citizenships. The research conveys that bias and social rejection very much depend on whether the identity of the returning women is protected or disclosed. Narratives of the women who have been handed over by the police to NGO’s once returned are spread, thus destroying the women’s ‘izzat’ (family honour). Therefore. with our project the aim will be to allow returning women to be able to make a living on their own and prevent them from turning into victims of social stigma. 

Some of these returning women have many aspiration that they feel as though they cannot fulfil, For example the prospect of marriage, appropriate housing, equality, ownership of property and land, non-discriminatory laws on travel and migration and having a sense of community is no longer something that returning trafficked victims think they are able to achieve. Thus, by creating a sisterhood whilst providing work skills for these individuals it increases the chances of these women fulfilling their goals as they reintegrate into society on their own accord. 

In order to first access the girls, we could engage with and recruit a Nepalese outreach worker so that they can engage the women personally and introduce us if and when they felt comfortable. The process would be kept private and confidential so that the girls could be ensured of the upmost safety, as they may fear that they could lose their jobs or be abused. The process would be timely as girls would be slow and hesitant to come forward so we would need to be extremely patient with the process and empathetic to the girls and women. 
Also, the issue of us choosing textiles as our chosen art project may be seen as offensive to victims whom have been in forced labour in the textile industry. We would need to ensure that the girls see that it is a choice and all up to their own creative ideas, plus ensure them that we would not be confiscating the money from them they we choose to sell them, but instead they would keep it all. If we do this, we hope to liberate the girls and make them feel independent, as due to their gender they are not used to being in control of their decisions or feeling as if they have a choice in matters. 

In terms of gaining the money we would need to set up a funding page in which we would hope to get donations from the public once they have learnt of our cause and what we hope to achieve for these girls whom are less fortunate and in need of help. Therefore, we would make a website to promote our project and need to gain media attention widely. To add to this, charity events would also be a good source of income that could help to support our project. Overall donations will be important to help keep the project going, as we are hopeful for the girls to possibly be able to sell their textiles/ art in which they would keep all of the money made. It would be positive for the girls to profit from the work as Nepal is extremely poverty stricken, being ranked “149 out of 189 countries on the Human Development Index” and has a significant problem in gender inequality (Plan International UK, 2019).
