Respectful
Enjoyed being in the war with all of his close buddies.
Kind
Quotes:
"That's how I felt like a civilian, and it made me sad. These guys had been my brothers. We'd loved one another."
This quote shows us how O'Brien enjoyed being in the war with his buddies. Although the war was tough, O'Brien liked being able to go through it with his friends.
"I survived, but its not a happy ending. I was a coward. I went to the war."
This quote shows the resiliency of O'Brien to go through the war when he did not want to go.

Description:
Leader of the group
Guilty due to deaths because he feels that it his fault. Carried letters for a girl named Martha.

Quotes:
" He would sometimes taste the envelope flaps, knowing her tongue had been there."
This quote is important because it shows how obsessed he was with this girl Martha.
"On the morning after Ted Lavender died, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross crouched at the bottom of his foxhole and burned Martha's letters."
This quote is important as it shows us that since Jimmy Cross believed it was his fault that Lavender died because he was too caught up with Martha, he burns Martha's letters to in a way get rid of her as a distraction.

Description:
Diligent
Practical
Good friend of O'Brien
"Kiowa tried to tell me the old man would've died anyway. he told me that it was a good kill."
This quote describes Kiowa well because it shows how he tried to make O'Brien feel better for himself. Kiowa is a good friend and tells O'Brien to relax and that it was a good kill so O'Brien can not think about it so much.
"The bad stuff never stops happening: it lives in its own dimension, replaying itself over and over."
This quote is said by O'Brien when he is recalling Kiowa sinking into the mud field. This quote shows us just how good friends he and Kiowa really were. Having lost Kiowa was definitely a bad part of the war for O'Brien.

Description:
Quiet
Unassuming
War has really taken its toll
"He was folded in with the war; he was part of the waste."
This quote explains Norman Bowker very well because it is after Kiowa has died and it shows just how much the war has taken its toll on him as a person. The quote says he is part of the waste, which means he is part of all the waste that is being left behind by the war.
"The truth is that i let the guy go."
This quote comes from Bowker when he is explaining what happened to Kiowa. He explains how he could've saved Kiowa but he was afraid of falling in the mud as Kiowa did. This shows us the quiet and laid back side of Bowker as he did not help Kiowa.
