While this is true, don't forget the "PEER" in PEER-tutoring! Get to know each other, step away from the academic content for a minute and chat about whatever!

That is what guided induction is all about. You present the tutee with the grammatical point they need to work on in an "authentic text" such as a transcript of an interview or a very brief story. Why would you speak in another language when both you and the tutee speak a common language ? 
World language learning is not "natural" (as of most learning to be honest!) which means we sometimes have to force ourselves to produce and use the language. 
This can done by introducing (or reminding tutees of) common phrases in the target language that can be used instead of English.
