In the 1830's, a British team of researchers developed a telegraph system that consisted five magnetic needles that could be pointed around a panel of letters and numbers by using an electric current. Also during this time, Samuel Morse developed his version of the electrical telegraph. With the help of Gale and Vail, they produced a single-circuit telegraph that worked by pushing the operator key down to complete the electric circuit of the battery. This sent an electrical current across a wire to a reciever on the other end.

Vail claims credit

Before the testing of the Morse telegraph in Washington D.C., Alfred Vail took it upon himself to claim credit to what he had done to make everything possible. He wrote in a letter that was stuck under the telegraph that was used in the test,"This lever and roller were invented by me in the sixth story of the New York Observer office, in 1844, before we put up the telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore... I am the sole and only inventor of this mode of telegraph embossing writing. Professor Morse gave me no clue to it... and I have not asserted publicly my right as first and sole inventor, because I wished to preserve the peaceful unity of the invention, and because I could not, according to my contract with Professor Morse, have got a patent for it. "

Samuel Morse was not the only contributor to the development to the electrical telegraph. His partner, Alfred Vail played a huge part in the development of the electrical telegraph. According to himself, he was the sole inventor of the Morse telegraph. Vail only kept quiet to preserve the peaceful unity of the invention.
