Question 8 from the viewing guide to "Guns, Germs, and Steel" asked if you agree with Diamond's argument that of a civilizations' ability to gain power, wealth, and strength "...what's more important is the hand that people have been dealt, the raw materials they've had at their disposal." Why or why not?
I agree with the statement because places with less natural resources were forced to adapt to the situation. They weren't able to advance as much as others because they had to keep adapting because of their lack of resources.

I agree with Jared Diamond when he says of a civilizations ability to gain power,

wealth, and strength, “...what’s far more important is the hand that people have been dealt, the raw materials they’ve had at their disposal.” Different civilizations developed differently based on the materials they had. Those who were able to domesticate animals, such as cows, pigs, sheep, and goats had more resources than those who weren’t. For example, the people who lived in the Middle East had some of the best crops/animals in the world at their disposal. While, New Guineans only had bananas, taro, and pigs. As a result, Middle Easterners were able to focus on developing new technology, such as making plaster and iron tools. Whereas, New Gineans were protein sufficient, and had to focus on gathering food, rather than developing new technology. Middle Eastern civilizations had more materials at their disposal, therefore they were able to be more successful than New Guineans civilizations. In conclusion, the raw materials a civilization has, greatly impacts how successful they are.

I agree with Jared Diamond, because this connects to his statement about geographical luck, and there are many examples of civilizations which thrived because of good climates and materials of a land, or had to move because of lack of it. One of these examples can be seen back in question 7, because the people who lived in the Fertile Crescent eventually did not have enough resources at their disposal, and they got lucky because there was suitable land at the same latitude, and moved there. Then they thrived, but if they had stayed in the Fertile Crescent without enough resources, they probably would have died out.

I agree with Jared Diamond's claim, and what he says about a civilization’s ability to gain power. Resources and environment are key factors in civilization growth. For example, people in the Fertile Crescent had fertile land, and preferred climate to grow crops. The animals in the region also provided clothing, food, and a way of transportation. New Guinea had a humid climate which was unpreferred for growing crops, and only had animals that were used for food not for transportation or clothing.

While places like the fertile crescent were bountiful in resources like crops and animals, and the climate was beneficial for growing and preserving crops, New Guinea has almost none of these. In New Guinea, they only had pigs that were imported from different countries, and the plants they were able to grow were difficult to grow and they were low on protein. They still had to hunt for food. However, I also believe that a big factor would be how they use the resources they have.

Yes i do because without those materials it is very very hard to become and sustain a successful civilization. An example of a society that has been dealt a bad hand so to speak is Papua new guinea. They did not have natural resources such as horses, oxen ,wheat, barley etc all materials and animals that helped other societies advance so quickly. Therefore it is far more important what raw materials a group etc has at their disposal

I agree with Jared Diamond when he says of a civilizations ability to gain power, wealth, and strength, “...what’s far more important is the hand that people have been dealt, the raw materials they’ve had at their disposal.” This is because some factors that are the most important are what you start out with, since it is much harder to start with nothing that to start with an abundance of resources.

Yes I do agree with Jared Diamond because domesticated crops and animals played a huge role in the ancient civilizations and since the people of the Middle East had access to many of these crops and animals they were given a huge advantage. If the people of New Guinea were to have lived in this Fertile Crescent that is the Middle East they would have been able to create a prosperous civilization as well. New Guineans and Middle Easterners had the same amount of intelligence, but one had more geographical luck than the other.
