Today, 99 percent of the population uses electricity as their main source of energy. About 20 years ago, about 85 percent of the population used electricity. Another example of great growth lies within the poverty of the citizens. Over half of the Vietnamese population was poor in 1993. Back then, most people only made $1.90 a day or less. The amount of people living in extreme poverty had gone down to about 13.5 percent in the year 2014. Vietnam has developed a 10 year strategy that focuses on promoting skills development, improving market institutions, and further infrastructure development. This is the 2011-2020 Socio-Economic Development Strategy or SEDS. Although this strategy is very good on paper, it has made slower progress than expected. This was recognized by SEDP, the Socio-Economic Development Plan, which works to emphasize areas in the SEDS that have been slow

A big sign of this was President Barack Obama visiting Vietnam on May 23-25, 2016. This type of behavior began in 1995, when the United States announced that they would normalize diplomatic relations with Vietnam. The year before, the 30 year embargo that the US had against Vietnam had ended. Not only that, but an American consulate was built in Vietnam in the year 1999. This let an american ambassador (consul) live in Ho Chi Minh City to protect the citizens of the area and promote the interests of the government. Ironically, our first ambassador was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam war. This man was the navy pilot Pete Peterson. For 6 and a half years he spent his life as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. In the same way, a Vietnamese consulate was built in New York. In the year 2000, the United States gave Vietnam $3.5 billion dollars
