At the beginning of the year, I sent out a Google Form to parents asking them to share their student's likes, dislikes, behaviors, etc. This gives me an opportunity to make instant connection with my students by talking about and incorporating things they like into conversations and classwork.

Random question for the day

I have a random question on my screen each day. As the kids come in they begin talking about it, when the bell rings, I welcome them and begin calling on people for their answer. I've found it helps them put aside whatever was happening between classes and refocus on my classroom. Though it takes several minutes at the beginning of class, it saves a LOT of effort from redirecting throughout class.

Weekly "Community Circles". Students bring chairs outside and form a circle. Question is asked by teacher, "What is your proudest moment?" Students hold onto stuffed cougar and share their experience. Stuffed cougar travels around the circle and everyone shares. Teacher then asks students to give a classmate a compliment and we go around the circle again with the stuffed cougar. Holding stuffed animal means you are talking and no stuffed animal means you are listening. Then students can share what they are doing over the weekend. This activity really opens up the class and helps students bond to one another. Turns a class into a family. <3
