I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams by Weezer

Genre: Alternative Rock

Year: 1996

Captain Ahab is showing even more obsessive tendencys toward Moby Dick. To the extent that this man can't go a day without thinking of the creature that took his leg. This is shown when he says in the book, "but I’m demoniac, I am madness maddened! That wild madness that’s only calm to comprehend itself!"- "I lost this leg. I now prophesy that I will dismember my dismemberer." Everyone at this point truly did think he was mad, but saw to pull through. It makes you wonder, why did the crew stay with Ahab?

In the song, I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams, there is a phrase that fits this situation well. Its " He is in my eyes, he is in my ears, He is in my blood, he is in my tears" This is signifying how Captain Ahab is holding this long grudge within him, not realizing it until the white whale is dead. How Moby dick in basically Ahab's conscience of imperfection, that he will never be perfect until his honor is repaired by beating Moby Dick and avenging his leg.

Every Breath You Take by The Police

Genre: Soft Rock/ New Wave

Year: 1983

This song signifies the mentality of the character, Captain Ahab, when he is describing for the first time, how the whale ate his leg to the crew. He is continuously adamant on killing this whale, basically in revenge for stealing his limb from him. This madness is showing its first effects on his mental state, how Ahab will not rest until this Moby Dick is caught.

During this time he says " it was Moby Dick that dismasted me; Moby Dick that brought me to this dead stump I stand on now.”- "I’ll chase [Moby Dick] round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition’s flames before I give him up." This directly correlates to when this chosen song, because in "Every Breath You Take" theres a line frequently repeated in the song saying "Every game you play, Every night you stay, I'll be watching you." This signifies Ahab's descent into madness, when he is in the first stages of being obsessed with this animal who took his leg. And instead of Ahab being grateful that he, himself, is alive, he continues to fixate on how the whale bested him and stole his honor.

Captain Ahab's Last Attempt (Chapter 135)

Gives You Hell by The All-American Rejects

Genre: Alternative

Year: 2008

At last the prophecy came true, and Ahab dies. Though right before his death, he says these words, "Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee." Ahab dies to the thing he spent most of his life chasing, just to die before completing his goal. Throughout this book, we have seen him descend into madness, and show multiple accounts of Ahab being a narcissistic personality. This final curse towards the whale in the final nail in the coffin that Captain Ahab would have never let Moby Dick live while Ahab was still breathing.

The song Gives you Hell portrays these same feelings of never letting up with the words, "When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell". And while the whale doesn't show any human traits, (not the genre for it), I am sure the captain curses Moby Dick from the grave showing the extent of his personality as a non- forgiving, all- remembering, grudge keeper.

Captain Ahabs torment (Chapter 44)

Eternal Torment by Malevolence

Genre: Heavy Rock

Year: 2012

This song is the personification of Captain Ahab's mind, torturing himself over not finding Moby Dick. This is shown through Ishmael's word, when he is commenting on Captain Ahab's Personality and tendencies. Ishmael says "God help thee, old man, thy thoughts have created a creature in thee; and he whose intense thinking thus makes him Prometheus; a vulture feeds upon that heart for ever; that vulture the very creature he creates." Prometheus, is a titan who stole fire for humanity and suffered for it in Hades kingdom. His punishment is being eaten alive by vultures while being tied to a rock for eternity. This is signifying that Ahab is going against gods will and thus by going after Moby Dick, who showed him humility by escaping Ahab's grasp and acquiring a trophy, and thus is getting punished by the thought of his insignificance pecking at his heart.

This is why I chose Eternal torment, due to the phrase "will choose my own path, I will not fall in line." Its further cementing that no matter what, Captain Ahab is going after this whale, against natural order, and is going to kill it. That is why he is being punished and being pulled into madness.

Captain Ahab's Narcissism (chapter 36)

Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) by Kelly Clarkson

Genre: Pop

Year: 2011

During this time of the book, Ahab is still justifying how he will kill the whale and how horrible it is for eating his leg. Until Captain Ahab says, "Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I’d strike the sun if it insulted me." Which is putting some of the actions Captain Ahab with his crew into view. Captain Ahab has always been prideful, ever since his character was introduced. But throughout the last chapters he has been becoming more and more narcissistic. And before your mind goes to Narcissus, the guy from Greek mythology who cant stop looking at himself, that is not the narcissism I am taking about. I am taking about the narcissistic personality disorder. Merriam- Webster Dictionary defines narcissistic personality disorder as "exaggerated sense of self-importance, lack of empathy for others, excessive pride in achievements, and snobbish, disdainful, or patronizing attitudes" All which Captain Ahab check off throughout the book, such as trying to gain Starbucks praise, and killing the whale that not only made him not perfect, and who also made a blow to his pride by making Ahab unable to best the whale first try, and taking a souvenir to remind Ahab of it.

Due to this discovery I chose this song due to the phrase "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" Which Ahab actively disagrees with. He is constantly reminded of his stump, and how Moby Dick took him down. Prompting his madness to go even further.
