At the age of 10 Niels entered the Grammelholms school(1891). He was a good student, but not at the top of his classes, he would finish about third or fourth in classes of about 20 students. Niels specialized in mathematics and physics in his final 2 years at Grammelholms. Then the young Bohr eventually attended Copenhagen University, where he received his master's and doctorate in physics by 1911.

His father appears to have help spark his son's interest in both physics and mathematics. The time period in which he lived in most certainly affected Niels Bohr’s studies. Bohr had to leave Germany during the 1940’s, because the Nazi secret police were about to arrest him, because of his being Jewish. It was because of his leaving the country that he was told about the Manhattan Project, and was led to help work on it.

He won the 1922 Nobel Prize in physics for his ideas and years later, after working on the Manhattan Project in the United States, called for responsible and peaceful applications of atomic energy across the world. The European Physical Society has declared the Niels Bohr Institute as a Historic Site with great international importance for developments in physics and research. The Niels Bohr Institute has been selected on this basis: “This is where the foundation of atomic physics and modern physics was created in a creative scientific environment inspired by Niels Bohr in the 1920s and 30s.

Bohr made numerous contributions to our understanding of atomic structure. As well as being considered one of the founders of quantum mechanics because he created the complementary theory that things may have a duel nature (as an electron is both a particle and a wave). He also devised a method for drawing models to represent the atoms nucleus and their electron arrangement because the atoms are too hard to see.
